Spartans Prevail with Second Half Rally Against Albright

YORK, Pa. – The York women's basketball team edged out Albright, 51-46, at home Wednesday night in a Commonwealth clash at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.

The Spartans overcame a three-point halftime deficit and out-scored the Lions, 30-22, in the second half. York swung the tide with a pivotal third quarter in which they scored 16 points and limited the Lions to just eight, while taking advantage of 11 Albright turnovers in the quarter.

How It Happened
  • The Lions owned a 14-9 lead after one quarter of play as the Spartans struggled to gain traction offensively out of the gates. Albright opened the game on a 6-0 run before York answered with a 9-2 run to take a 9-8 lead with 2:15 left in the period. Albright held the Spartans scoreless the rest of the quarter while scoring six unanswered to take a five-point lead into the first break. Brooklyn Naylor led the way for the Spartans at the end of the first with six of the team's nine points.
  • The Spartans fell behind by as much as eight early in the second quarter, but battled back to cut the deficit to three, 24-21, by quarter's end. The York defense frustrated Albright all quarter as the Lions shot just 20.0% (4-for-20) from the floor despite Albright winning the rebounding battle, 18-7, including a 10-3 advantage on the offensive glass. Naylor led the Spartans with eight points at the halftime break, while Mackenzie Dover paced the Lions with seven.
  • York doubled-up the Lions in the third quarter, 16-8, to take a 37-32 lead into the fourth. The Spartans limited Albright to just two made field goals in the quarter as the Lions shot 16.7% from the floor with 11 turnovers to their credit. York opened a little breathing room with an 8-2 scoring run through the final three minutes of the quarter with Alyssa Hocker leading the way with six third quarter points.
  • After a back-and-forth start to the fourth quarter, Breana Grim (6) and Makenna Zimmerman (4) combined to put York on a 10-2 run which gave the Spartans a 10-point advantage, their largest lead of the game, with just under three minutes to play. The Lions came roaring back and scored seven unanswered points to cut the York lead down to three with 35 seconds to play. The Spartans held Albright to just one shot attempt the rest of the way as the Green and White salted the game away on their way to victory.

York snapped a two-game skid against Albright and improve to 3-4 in the all-time series … The Spartans held Albright to a season-low field goal percentage of 27.1% and limited the Lions to their second-lowest point total of the season … Albright finished the night +15 in the rebounding battle with a season-high 61 total rebounds … Makenna Zimmerman recorded second double-double of the season with 11 points and a career-high tying 12 rebounds; she has now scored in double figures in four-straight games … Breana Grim led York with 12 points on the night .. Brooklyn Naylor broke out of a two-game scoreless drought with a season-high tying 10 points to go along with seven rebounds.
