Spartan Women Keep Rolling with Win at Stevenson

York improves to 3-0 in league play and extends win streak to four

OWINGS MILLS, Md.– The York women's basketball team improved to 3-0 in Commonwealth play following Wednesday night's 72-67 victory at Stevenson.

The Spartans never trailed on the night and led by as much as 26 with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter. The Mustangs fought back using a 27-point fourth quarter performance and forced multiple ties late in the game, but York shut the door with a 7-2 run through the final two minutes to seal the win.

Taylor Burda led all players with 21 points, while her Spartan teammates Alyssa Hocker scored 12 points with eight rebounds and Makenna Zimmerman poured in 10 points with six rebounds. Emori Jeselskis led the Mustangs with 20 points and scored 14 in Steven's big fourth quarter comeback.

How It Happened
  • The Spartans turned an opening 9-0 run into a 23-13 advantage at the end one quarter of play. Brooklyn Naylor led the way for York with eigh first-quarter points and Breana Grim chipped in six as the Spartans shot 45.5% from the floor. York also owned a 13-6 edge on the boards with a 6-1 margin on the offensive glass.
  • York opened the second quarter on a 13-5 run and built up a 42-24 halftime lead. The Spartans shot 57.1% from the floor (8-for-14) and held the Mustangs to just 27.8% with an 0-for-6 effort from beyond the three-point arc. Taylor Burda accounted for over half of York's points in the second quarter with her 10-point performance.
  • The Spartans out-scored Stevenson 11-3 through the first five minutes of the third quarter to open up their largest lead of the night at 26 points. The Mustangs turned momentum back on their side as they ended the quarter on a 13-2 run to cut the Spartan lead to 15 (55-40) by quarter's end. Stevenson out-scored York 16-13 in the quarter, while holding the Spartans to under 30% from the floor and owning a 14-8 margin on the boards.
  • Stevenson kept the momentum rolling into the fourth quarter and opened the period on a 22-7 run to tie the game, 62-62, with 4:35 left to play. The Mustangs would tie the game two more times, but then failed to convert a field goal in the final two-and-a-half minutes as they saw York pull away. A three-point play by Taylor Brenneman on a layup with 1:36 left put the Spartans up five and ultimately sealed the deal for the Green and White.
