York, PA- The York College Spartans played the Penn State Abington Lions to a 2-2 draw Wednesday night in York.
The very physical matchup saw York come back from a one goal deficit at halftime to forge their third tie at Graham Field in four games this year.
York stays at .500 with a 2-2-3 record and the Lions are now 3-3-3.
How It Happened
• Out of the gate York did not look out of sync at all after having last scheduled game vs Salisbury cancelled by the recent tropical depression. They moved the ball with ease from kickoff and opened the scoring quickly when
Gavin Bealer found
Brayden Safley behind the defense from deep outside the right side of the box in the sixth minute. The goal was Safley's third of the year.
• Penn State Abington had trouble mustering offense against the swarming Spartan defense, but made it count when they got opportunities. In their first corner of the game, Lion senior Mike Thomas completed a clean pass to Hugh Nungessor, who used his head to score his second goal of the year, tying the game at one in the 28
th minute.
• The Lions used that momentum to score the go-ahead goal in the next minute when a Spartan free kick bounced off the side of the goalpost, got cleared across the field, and took a few Abington bounces before Arsene Bado set up Eljo Agolli within striking distance to give the Lions their first lead of the evening. It was Agolli's third goal in the last two games and team-leading sixth of the season.
• After a slew of shots on goal to start the second half, the Green and White finally evened the game at two when
Noah Roche crossed to
Tyler Howlett in the box who in turn headed the ball towards
Dermot Williamson. The junior defender easily snuck the ball in for his second goal of the season.
• The Spartans were tested one more time in the 75th minute when Agolli made a nice move to the left side of the box but was stopped by an aggressive tackle from Williamson, who was backed up by York keeper
Mason Boyd. Boyd enjoyed a relatively quiet second half and had a solid outing overall in his first start since the Spartan's season opener.
