Spartans Cruise Past Widener in MACC Semifinals

York advances to third-straight MAC Commonwealth title game

YORK, Pa. - The top-seed York women's lacrosse team put together a dominating 16-1 effort over fourth-seed Widener in the MAC Commonwealth Semifinals at home Wednesday.

The Spartans put the game away early as they jumped out to a 10-0 halftime lead and held the Pride scoreless until the final minute of the third quarter.

How It Happened
York won the first six draw controls of the game and rushed out to a 6-0 lead to force a Widener timeout with 5:02 left in the first quarter. Teresa Matthias tacked on another with 1:33 left for her second of the quarter as the Spartans took a 7-0 lead after one period of play. York limited the Pride to just two shots in the opening quarter and did not record their first shot until eight minutes into the contest.

York tacked on three more goals in the second quarter to get to a 10-0 lead and running clock with 4:10 left in the period. The Spartans won nine of the 11 draws in the first half with Christina Vendelis leading the way with five. Bella Garabo posted four saves in her first-half shutout effort as the Spartan defense limited the Pride to seven total shots in the first half.

The Pride scored with 52 seconds left in the third quarter to break up the shutout as the Spartans led 12-1 after three quarters of play. Garabo racked up six saves with just one goal against as her outing came to a close following the Widener tally.

Gianna Huet scored twice in the fourth to lead a 4-0 Spartan run to end the game. Matthias also got involved in the scoring effort as she netted her 100th career goal. On the defensive end, York limited the Pride to just two shots in the fourth quarter, both of which were on goal and both saved by McKenna Seashole as she posted a clean sheet in the period.

The Spartans will remain home and host two-seed Messiah on Saturday for the MAC Commonwealth title. First draw from Kinsley Field is set for 3 p.m.

York improves to 4-0 all-time against Widner, including a record 2-0 in conference postseason play … the Spartans are now 5-1 all-time in MAC Commonwealth tournament history and are advancing to their third-straight MACC title game … York has now won 19-straight games against MAC Commonwealth opponents including regular and postseason play … the Spartans have held conference opponents to single-digits in all nine games this season … Teresa Matthias is now just the eighth different player in program history to reach the 100-goal milestone following her hat trick today … Kiersten Blanchard ended the day with 101 draw controls for the season and is just the third different player in program history to reach the century mark in a single season.
