Spartans Sweep Eastern to Close Regular Season Play

York clinches the third seed for the MAC Commonwealth Championship with the sweep

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - The York softball squad ended the regular season with a sweep at Eastern on Tuesday to jump up to the third seed heading into the conference postseason tournament.

York took control early to capture a 4-2 game one victory and then broke a scoreless tie in the final frame of a 4-0 eight-inning win in game two. Emma Keller led the Spartans with three total hits on the day, including the RBI-double in game two which notched the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run.

LP: Jania Long (9-5)

How It Happened
The Spartans got up early with a 4-0 lead through the first three innings and rode that momentum to the finish line. York got to work in the first inning with four of the first five batters reaching base. Kaela Fritz came through with a two-out RBI-single to drive in Alyssa Harhigh as the Spartans took a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.

York hung three more runs on the board in the third with three hits in the inning. Emma Keller led off the inning with a solo shot to right field, but the Eagles retired two of the next four Spartan batters. Bri McKeown came through in the clutch with a two-run single to left center as Harhigh and Daphney Adams came around to score as York broke open a four-run advantage.

Spartan hurler Amanda Criss started out on fire as she surrendered just one hit through the first four innings and was perfect through the first 3.1 frames. The Eagles eventually got to Criss in the fifth as they tagged her for two runs on three hits, and received help from a Spartan throwing error which made the second run unearned.

Criss and the Spartan defense held strong under pressure through the final two innings as they stranded three Eagles on the base paths with runners reaching third in each inning. Criss finished the game with a season-high 11 strikeouts with zero walks and tossed just 83 pitches.

GAME 2
York 4, Eastern 0

Pitchers of Record
WP: Natalie Rietema (9-9)
LP: Hailey Krichten (1-3)

How It Happened
The two teams combined for just two hits each through the first seven innings before the Spartans erupted for four runs on five hits in the eighth to come away with the sweep.

The Spartans found themselves in some hot water in the bottom of the seventh. Susana Perez led off the inning with a pinch-hit single and the Eagles had runners on second and third with no outs following an errant throw to first by McKeown. The Spartan third baseman picked herself up and played a role in two-consecutive outs before Natalie Rietema struck out Long to get out of the jam and send the game into an extra inning.

After a quick out to start the eighth inning, the final seven Spartan batters all reached base in a four-run rally. Taylor Coon started the rally with a single to center and scored from first on a Keller double. Keller came in to score on the next batter as Morgan Sauers poked a single to right field. The Spartans then loaded the bases for McKeown who came through with a two-run single as York owned a 4-0 advantage heading to the bottom of the eighth.

Rietema retired all three Eastern batters in order in the eighth with McKeown recording the final out as she snared a Kelci Cost line drive to the hot corner.

Rietema racked up 165 pitches with 13 fly outs, seven ground outs, four strikeouts and five walks as she evened up her record at 9-9 on the season.

Up Next
The Spartans will take on two-seed Messiah at noon on Thursday to open play at the MAC Commonwealth Championship. The three-day tournament is a double-elimination format. All games will be played at Lebanon Valley.
