IJAMSVILLE, MD- The York College men's golf squad finished second at the 2023 MAC Commonwealth championship tournament at P.B. Dye Golf Club in Ijamsville, MD as the two-day tournament concluded on Sunday.
The host Hood College Blazers won the team title, their first men's golf championship with a two-day total of 618. The Spartans finished seven strokes back with a score of 625. Stevenson finished third at 628 while Eastern was fourth in the seven-team field with a score of 635.
The good news for the Spartans came with the performance of
Gavin Ganter. The sophomore, who fired a course record 70 on Saturday, hung on for the win on Sunday as he finished one stroke in front of two others to capture the individual title. Ganter was one stroke ahead of Eastern's Jake Micewski and Hood's Brady Leonard.
Ganter got off to a blistering start on Saturday as he was one over on the front nine. He had two birdies and a trio of bogeys as he was one-over through nine holes. He was fantastic on the back with three birdies and six pars as he shot 33 on the back. His two-under par 70 gave him the first-round lead and the college course record.
Sunday got off to an awful start for the Spartan sophomore as he posted a quad 8 to kick off his second round. He steadied the ship over the next eighth holes as he finished five over on the front. Ganter parred the first four holes on the back nine before three straight bogeys trimmed his lead to a shot. He notched par on the final two holes as he picked up his first collegiate tournament championship.
The championship earns Ganter the MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year award. He is the second Spartan to earn the Commonwealth Player of the Year award as teammate
Riley Rohlfs earned the honor in 2021.Ganter finished 17
th in the championships as a freshman in 2022.
Rohlfs was York's second finisher as he placed fourth, two strokes behind Ganter. Rohlfs shot 76 both days for the Spartans. On Saturday, Rohlfs opened the tournament with a pair of bogeys to start the round. He got a shot back with a birdie on four before he had three bogeys to end the front nine with a four-over-par 40. His back nine started two two bogeys on the first three holes but he caught fire over the final six as he was two under to finish with an even-par 36 on the back.
On Sunday, Rohlfs was one over through five holes on the front. He went bogey, birdie, bogey, and par over the final four holes of the front nine to finish with a 38. He suffered a double bogey on 11 which knocked him back from a tie for second. He finished even over the remaining seven holes for a back-nine 38 and the fourth-place finish.
Rohlfs ends his Spartan career as a three-time first-team All-MAC Commonwealth finisher. He won the tournament in 2021, finished tied for fifth in 2022 and fourth in his final championship. He was also the 2021 Rookie of the Year in addition to being the Player of the Year award as a sophomore.
Sophomore
Matthew Salter was York's third tournament finisher as he tied for 16
th with a two-day total of 160. Salter shot 82 on Saturday and followed that with a 78 on Sunday. In his opening round, Salter began his round with a triple bogey on hole number one. He had a double on four and bogeys on five and six as he was seven over through six holes. He finished with a 43 on the front. He bounced back on the inward nine as he carded a three-over-par 39 to finish with the 82.
Sunday was much better for Salter as he was two-over-par on the front nine with two birdies, four bogeys and three pars. He was four-over on the back to finish 16
th. Salter was an All-MAC Commonwealth finisher last year as he placed tenth.
Senior
Nick Fioravante concluded his Spartan career with a 22
nd place finish as he shot a two-day total of 163. Fioravante finished his opening nine with a five-over 41. He then shot a four-over 40 on the back to finish with a first day 81.
On Sunday, Fioravante was steady on the front nine as he shot a three-over 39. His back nine didn't go according to plan. He started with three pars but they had two doubles to sandwich a birdie on 14. He then finished bogey, par, triple for a back nine 43 and a Sunday score of 82.
Fioravante finishes his Spartan career as a two-time, first-team All-MAC Commonwealth finisher as he placed fourth as a sophomore and second as a junior.
Senior
Ian Arnold was York's fifth tournament participant as he finished 23
rd with a two-day total of 166. Arnold got off to a tough start on Saturday as he was nine-over for his first nine holes. He turned it around big time on the back nine as he fired a one-over 37 on the back to finish with a score of 82.
On Sunday, Arnold had another tough front nine as he had a double, six bogeys, a bridie and a par for a seven-over 43. He had a double on ten and then three more bogeys to finished with a 41 on the back and a Sunday card of 84.
The championship tournament closes out the Spartan careers of Rohlfs, Fioravante and Arnold as they helped lead the Spartans to the 2021 Commonwealth championship and a pair of runner-up finishes. Â
