MOHNTON, PA – The York College men's golf squad earned their third tournament victory of the year as they won a three-way tiebreaker to capture the title of the Alvernia Spring Invitational.
The Spartans finished tied with Stevens and Eastern with a score of 607. The Green and White won the tiebreaker as their fifth tournament participant shot 160 compared to 161 for Stevens and 163 for Eastern.
Drew finished fourth at 611 followed by Alvernia at 613 to round out the top five in the 12 team field.
The tournament moved to LedgeRock Golf Club after being held at Stonewall Golf Club on Monday. LedgeRock played at par 72 and played 295 yards longer than Stonewall. After shooting 294 as team on Monday, the Spartans shot 313 on Tuesday.
The Spartans were led by senior
Riley Rohlfs as he finished tied for third in the tournament. Rohlfs fired a two-day total of 148 with a day two 80 after rolling to a 68 on Monday. Rohlfs began his day on number nine and he finished with a four-over-par 40 on the back nine. He then finished his day with a score of 40 on the front nine. Rohlf's top five finish was his fourth of the year.
Fellow senior
Nick Fioravante recorded his first top ten finish of the year as he placed ninth with a two-day total of 151. Fioravante shot a three-over-par 75 on Tuesday. He started on hole number 11. He birdied two of his first eight holes as he was one under when he headed to hole number one. Fioravante finished the front nine with a three-over 39. He then bogeyed ten to finish with an even-par 36 on the back nine. His score was York's best on Tuesday.
Sophomore
Jason Velez finished one stroke back of Fioravante with a two-day total of 152. Velez shot a 78 on Tuesday after a Monday 74. Velez started his round on hole 12 and began with a flourish as he birdied his first hole of the day. After two pars, he had a double sandwiched by two bogeys. He made the turn and fired a two-over-par 38 on the front including an eagle on the par five eighth hole. He concluded his round with a bogey and a par as he shot 40 on the back nine. The top ten finish was his second of the year.
Sophomore
Matthew Salter concluded the tournament tied for 18
th with a score of 156. Salter shot an 80 on Tuesday after a 76 on Monday. Salter started on the ninth hole and opened with a par. He shot 43 on the back nine but came back to shoot a 37 on the front nine with two birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Sophomore
Gavin Ganter was York's fifth finisher who ultimately won the tiebreaker for the tournament as he shot 160 for the tournament. Ganter shot 84 on Tuesday after finishing with a 76 on Monday. Ganter started his day on 10 and shot 46 on his first nine. He bounced back to shoot 38 on the front nine including an eagle on eight.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, April 15 when they travel to the Garden State Collegiate Classic. The two-day tournament will be held at Hawk Pointe Golf Club in Washington, New Jersey. The tournament kicks off at 10:00 am on Saturday.
