Softball Swept by Commonwealth Leader LVC on Saturday

The Dutchmen won the opener 2-1 in ten innings and then cruised in game two

York, Pa – The Spartans hosted a double header Saturday against MAC Commonwealth leader Lebanon Valley on a sunny Saturday in York. The Dutchman captured a 2-1 ten inning win in the opener and completed the sweep with a 12-2 five inning romp in the nightcap.

Game One:
Records: York 8-9 (3-2 MACC); LVC 15-4 (5-0 MACC)
Runs: York 1; LVC 2
Hits: York 6; LVC 8
Errors: York 2; LVC 0
WP: Jordan Walter (7-2); LP: Amanda Criss (3-3)

How it Happened:
• This was a pitching duel between two aces in LVC's Jordan Walter and the Spartans' Amanda Criss. Walter finished the game with eight strikeouts while Criss finished with 10.
• Both teams managed to get runners on base and in scoring positions multiple times throughout the game. The Dutchman had the first scoring opportunity in the third inning with two on in. Sam Burns lifted a fly ball to right with Anna Marie Hockman at third.
York's Reagan Wolford made the catch and then threw a strike to the plate, cutting down Hockman for the double play, ending the inning and the Dutchmen threat.
• The bottom of the fourth saw the first hit for the Spartans as Wolford singled up the middle putting runners at first and second. But that would be all as the Dutchman got out of the inning with the game still scoreless.
• LVC would cause another scare in the fifth as Hockman singled and Megan Heard reached on a throwing error, putting runners in scoring position. But again, the Spartans would get out of the inning as Criss got a pop out and a strikeout. In the bottom of the fifth, Taylor Coon and Alyssa Harhigh would both single putting runners at first and third for York. However, Walter would stiffen up as she struck out the side to finish the frame.
• After a quick two innings of play and still no score both teams would find themselves heading into extra innings. The eighth inning would get exciting as a second Spartan error would put Danni Holmes on first. Two sacrifice bunts later, Holmes was on third and the error would come back to bite the Spartans as Julia Craig lined a single to left and scores the first run of the game. The damage could have been worse as Lindsey McCurdy lined a shot to right field for a base hit. Wolford made a great throw to the relay and Morgan Sauers made another great throw to cut down pinch runner Maddy Gronback at the plate to end the inning.
• It didn't take long for the Spartans to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. Harhigh came to the plate for the Spartans and, on the first pitch, smacked a home run to left and tied the game at one. Bri McKeown singled to right field and put the winning run on base but that would be all as three straight outs would end the inning and force the teams to head to the ninth.
• After a quick ninth inning, the tenth started with the international tiebreaker with the runner placed at second.  The Dutchmen then loaded the bases after a walk and a single. With two outs, Craig drew a walk to force home the go ahead run before the Spartans could get out of the frame.
• The bottom of the tenth couldn't have started better for York as a single put runners at the corners. After a pop up for the first out, McKeown laid down a bunt and the Dutchmen couldn't make a play as the bases were loaded. Walter got out of the inning and closed out the game with a fielder's choice out at the plate and a pop up as the Spartans couldn't push across the equalizer.

How it Happened:
• The Dutchmen came out swinging from start of game two. LVC plated four runs on four hits with another Spartan error as York found themselves down big early. It could have been worse but the York defense turned a nifty 5-3 double play to end the frame.
• York was able to get on the board in the bottom of the first. Taylor Coon got hit by a pitch to start the inning for the Spartans. With one out, Alyssa Harhigh who would start game two where she left off with another homer to left, making it a 4-2 game.
• The Spartans would threaten again in the bottom of the second. Reagan Wolford doubled to left but that would be all the Spartans would get as Dutchmen starter Erin Sinatra forced two pop ups to end the inning.
• LVC extended their lead to 5-2 with a run in the fourth thanks to an error. Then the Dutchmen exploded for a seven-run top of the fifth to put the game away. LVC scored their seven runs on six hits and two critical errors.
