#12 Spartans Edged By #8 F&M, 12-10

LANCASTER, Pa. - The No. 12 York women's lacrosse team fell, 12-10, in a closely-contested battle in their annual showdown with No. 8 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.

In a game that had eight ties, the team that scored last seemed destined to win, and that team was F&M. The Diplomats tied the game, 10-10, with 11:06 to left in the fourth and scored two more unanswered, while also holding the Spartans to just one fourth-quarter tally, to clinch their second win over a ranked opponent this week.

How It Happened
The two teams stood dead even in shots (6), saves (1), ground balls (6) and draw controls (3), but the Diplomats held a 3-2 edge at the end of one quarter of play. F&M jumped out to a 2-0 lead through the first four minutes of play, but Teresa Matthias answered for York less than 30 seconds later to cut the Diplomat lead in half. Logan Ward tied the game up, 2-2, with 5:01 left in the first, but F&M answered less than two minutes later with a Lauren Pittman goal to take a one-goal advantage at the end of the first 15 minutes of play.

The Diplomats extended their lead back up to two as Lane Lambeth opened the second-quarter scoring 4:13 into the period. York came right back with a pair of free-position goals by Kiersten Blanchard and Sydney Mentzer 20 seconds apart to tie the game up, 4-4, with 7:38 left in the second. F&M responded with a pair of goals 62 seconds apart as the game stood tied yet again with 5:27 left. York held the Diplomats without a shot the rest of the quarter and rallied back with a pair of goals by Ward and Mentzer to knot the game up, 6-6, at halftime.

York played tough defensively through the first five minutes of the third quarter with a pair of saves by Bella Garabo and caused turnovers by Mentzer and Sarah Christensen. Good defense led to offense as the Spartans scored twice less than two minutes apart to take an 8-7 lead with 8:11 left in the third quarter. The Diplomats countered with a pair of quick goals to regain the lead with 62 left in the third quarter, but York won the ensuing draw and tied the game, 9-9, on a Mentzer free-position goal with 25 seconds left.

The Spartans took advantage of an early fourth-quarter turnover by the Diplomats and regained the lead with a goal by Ward with 13:01 remaining. F&M took control the rest of the way and out-shot the Spartans 10-4, while out-scoring York 3-0 to come away with the victory.
