PINEHURST, N.C. – The York College men's golf squad opened up the 2023 portion of their schedule with a trip to the Tiger Invite at Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina this weekend.
The tournament was scheduled as a two-day event but heavy rains in the region early Sunday morning washed out the second round, making the tournament an 18-hole event.
York finished tied for 16
th as they shot a team total of 321, tying them with tournament host Hampden-Sydney. Methodist won the team title with a score of 300, edging Guilford (301) for the team championship. Babson (303) finished third followed by Oglethorpe (305) in fourth.
Senior
Riley Rohlfs led the way for the Spartans as he shot a six-over-par 78. He opened his round with four bogeys in his first five holes before he registered a birdie on 15, his sixth hole of the day. He finished his first nine three-over. His second nine was much of the same with four bogeys and one birdie for another 39. Rohlfs finished tied for 34
th in the tournament.
Fellow senior
Nick Fioravante was York's next finisher as he shot an eight-over-par 80, good for a tied for 57
th place finish. Fioravante was great on his first nine as he was at even par heading to his second nine. He had a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys through nine holes. He was at even par through 13 holes but the final five didn't work out as he hoped with three bogeys, a double and a triple as he carded a 44 for his 80.
Sophomore
Gavin Ganter was York's third finisher as he was one stroke back of Fioravante at nine-over-par 81. Ganter was five-over on the front and followed that with a four-over-par 40 on his second nine. Ganter did end the round with a birdie on the par five ninth hole.
Matthew Salter and
Ian Arnold tied as the Spartans final scorer. The duo both shot a ten-over-par 82 to tie for 71
st. Salter shot 41 over his opening nine as he had three doubles and a birdie. He shot a matching 41 on the back nine with a pair of doubles and a bogey.
Arnold began the round one under through three holes before ending the nine with a four-over 40. He shot a six-over 42 on the back for his 82.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, March 25 when they travel to the Bridges Golf Club in Abbottstown to participate in the annual Green Terror Spring Invitational hosted by McDaniel College. The two day tournament kicks off Saturday at noon.
