Women's Hoops Season Comes to a Close

Widener outlasted York in regular season finale

CHESTER, PA – The York College women's basketball team saw their 2022-23 campaign come to a close as the Widener University Pride downed the Spartans 76-67 in the regular season finale for both squads.
With the win, Widener advances to the Commonwealth post-season tournament thanks to their win and an upset victory from Eastern over Stevenson. The Spartans and Pride finished with identical conference records. While the two teams split their regular season meetings, Widener held the second tiebreaker which enabled them to advance.
The Spartans finish the campaign with a record of 10-15 and 7-9 in the Commonwealth. The Pride heads into the tournament with a mark of 10-15 while they are also 7-9 in the league.
 
How It Happened
• The Spartans jumped out to a 4-0 lead 1:41 into the game. The Pride responded by ripping off a 13-3 spurt to take a 13-7 lead. The Pride nailed three triples while they also went 4-for-4 from the stripe. Mary McFillin, who entered the game averaging just over four points per game, drained three three-pointers during the run.
• After York cut the lead to 13-12 thanks to a Tori Geitner three and an Alyssa Hocker bucket, the Pride smacked the Spartans with an 11-1 run over the final 3:46 to forge a 24-13 lead after ten minutes of play. Widener converted 5-for-8 from three in the first quarter while they were also a perfect 5-for-5 from the line.
• The opening two minutes of the second quarter wasn't much better for the Spartans as the Pride scored seven of the first nine points of the period to take a 31-15 lead. York responded with a 14-4 run, cutting the Widener lead to 35-29 with 1:29 left in the quarter. Sophomore Taylor Burda tallied seven points on the run as the Spartans trimmed their deficit to six. Unfortunately for York, the Pride scored four of the final five points of the half to take a 39-30 lead to the break.
• With the Pride leading 43-42, the Spartans ripped off seven straight points, cutting their deficit to 43-39 with 5:43 left in the third. The teams would go back and forth the remainder of the quarter as Widener took a 55-50 lead to the final period of play.
• The Pride opened the fourth with a 6-2 spurt as they pushed their lead to 61-52. York scored eight of the next 12 points to trim the Pride lead to 65-60. Again, the teams went back and forth as they each scored five points over the next three minutes as the Pride held a 70-65 advantage with 1:05 left. Unfortunately for York, the Pride went 6-for-6 from the line to secure the nine-point victory.
 
By the Numbers
The Spartans held Widener to 40.3% shooting from the floor including 7-for-24 (29.2%) from three … York shot 43.1% from the floor including 6-for-22 from three … the Pride held a huge advantage from the free throw line as they went 19-for-22 (86.4%) while York was 11-for-15 (73.3%) … the Pride held a 37-25 advantage on the glass including a 10-1 bulge in offensive rebounds and that led to Widener having a 16-3 margin in second chance points … both teams committed just nine turnovers in the game but Widener turned York's miscues into 16 points while the Spartans turned Widener's errors into just five points … Mary McFillin led all scorers with 26 points as she was 9-for-15 from the floor including 5-for-11 from three and 3-for-3 from the stripe .. Mia Robbins contributed 17 points and seven rebounds while Lindsay Kutz had 13 points and seven boards … Jordan D'Anbrosio was the fourth Widener player in double figures with 11 points.
 
Spartan Notes
The teams split their season series and the Pride holds a 4-2 all-time advantage in the series … the game closes out the careers of seniors Bradi Zumbrum, Savannah Wilson, and Tori Geitner … Zumbrum led the way on Saturday with 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two blocked shots and two steals in 37 minutes of work … Zumbrum was 8-for-15 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the line … sophomore Taylor Burda added 15 points, six rebounds and three assists in 39 minutes of play … junior Brooklyn Naylor tallied 11 points as she was 5-for-7 from the floor and 1-for-1 from the line to go along with four rebounds and a career-high three blocked shots … the Spartans had a season-high 21 assists in the loss.
 
Up Next
The loss concludes the Spartan season. Head coach Betsy Witman must replace Zumbrum, Wilson and Geitner as the Spartans will kick off the 2023-24 in early November.
