Falcons Defeat Spartans in Third-Straight Title Match Meeting

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The second-seed Spartan women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision at top-seeded Messiah on Saturday afternoon as the two sides met for the third-straight time in the MAC Commonwealth title match.

The Falcons poured on three second-half tallies to put the game out of reach after owning a one-goal halftime lead. Freshman Meg Kalthof, the conference's leading goal scorer, notched York's lone goal of the game and spoiled the Messiah shutout with her tally in the final minute.

How It Happened
  • The Falcons had the field tilted in their favor early, but York defended well and prevented Messiah from getting any quality chances. Messiah's pressure eventually paid off in the 13th minute on a tough break for the Spartan defense. Bailie Dull carried the ball up the right side and serviced a cross towards the top of the box where Sara Frensley managed to get a head on it to disrupt the pass. Unfortunately for York, Fresley's header kicked left and landed directly on the feet of Bella Touzeau who finished to the lower left corner from nine yards out for the game's first tally.
  • After the goal, Messiah continued to bring pressure, but the Spartans made life difficult for the Falcons as they surrendered just four more shots the rest of the half and only two on target. Spartan goalie Madison O'Brien came up with a big save on Kierstyn Fogle's shot in the 43rd minute on a well-struck ball from 12 yards out. The Falcons ended the first-half with a 5-0 advantage in shots and 4-0 margin in corners.
  • Messiah came out of the halftime break with a jump in their legs and tacked on another tally off a corner set piece three minutes into the second stanza. Prior to the corner, O'Brien made a sprawling save on a Julie Martin shot that got redirected out the endline which set up Messiah's corner opportunity. Kristina Akelson served the ball in from the flag over the out-reached hands of O'Brien where Kaitlyn Laird came flying in to head the ball into the net for the game's second goal.
  • The Falcons remained on the hunt for more and found the back of the net again in the 55th minute. Hannah Adair had a step on her defender and sent a shot off the right post from inside the 18-yard line, but she managed to collect her own rebound and finished on her second attempt.
  • The Falcon extended to 4-0 in the 69th minute on a Molly Adams tally from 28 yards out. Adams dribbled up the right side before reversing course and maneuvered back towards the middle of the field where she was left unmarked. With a clean look at the goal, Adams decided to let it rip and her shot sailed high, but just under the crossbar and out of the reach of O'Brien.
  • The Spartans would not go down without a fight as Meg Kalthof netted a goal in the final minute for her 11th of the season. Morgan Joyce set up the play as she fought off a defender while dribbling up the left side and sent a through ball ahead to a streaking Kalthof who ripped a shot from 16-yards out into the net.
