YORK, PA- The York College Spartan women's soccer squad defeated the Albright College Lions in decisive fashion by a score of 7-0, extending their win streak to four on Wednesday night in York.
The Spartans matched their win total from last year with their victory tonight, and remain undefeated in MAC play as they are now 12-5 overall and 6-0 in the league. It was York's biggest offensive output of the season. The seven goals were a feat that hadn't been seen by a Spartan women's soccer squad since 2012.
The game was also highlighted by the team's annual recognition of Morgan's Message, an organization that advocates for student-athlete mental health.
How it Happened
• The Spartans could not get to Albright goalkeeper Mckenna LeVan in the early minutes of the contest despite persistent pressure, as LeVan had four early saves. York eventually got on the board in the 19th minute off a picture-perfect corner kick from
Meg Kalthof, who found the head of
Carissa Baugus for her second goal of the season.
• York scored again on a designed set when
Sara Frensley found a moving
Alyssa Russell in the box who used her right foot to increase the Spartan's lead. Russell's 26th minute goal was her third of the season.
• The Green and White started off the second half with the same sense of urgency, scoring two goals in the first two minutes. Frensley, who scored her second goal of the season, and
Ashlynn Weger, who got her fifth tally of the year, contributed the first two goals of a five goal onslaught by the Spartans in the second half respectively.
• Kalthof increased her goal scoring streak to four games in the 84th minute with a highlight worthy individual effort past the Albright defense for a right-footed goal.
• The goalkeeping trio of
Madison O' Brien,
Sophia Albino, and
Allison Abzug helped record the seventh Spartan shutout of the year. York finished the game out-shooting Albright 29-1 in total shots and 18-1 in shots on goal. The Spartans also had a 5-1 margin in corner kicks.
