Martin Scores Twice as Spartans Down Hood 5-1

Martin scored twice while Howlett and Holy each had two assists

FREDERICK, MD – The York College men's soccer squad got back on the winning side of the ledger with a 5-1 win at Hood College on Saturday night in MAC Commonwealth play.
The Spartans snapped a two-game losing skid as they improve to 5-6-3 overall and 2-3 in the league. The Blazers fall to 3-13-1 and 1-3-1 in the conference.
 
How It Happened
• The Spartans wasted little time in opening the scoring as Matt Martin found the back of the net off a pass from Luke Nall to put the Spartans up 1-0 4:41 into the contest. The Green and White made it 2-0 just under seven minutes later as Matt Zeiders scored his first goal of the year off a helper from Tyler Howlett. Martin notched his second goal of the night in the 23rd minute of the game as Howlett found him with a pass that he finished off to put York up 3-0. Hood got on the board in the 26th minute on a Jackson Quenzer tally.
• The Spartans out-shot the Blazers 10-2 in the first half including 6-1 in shots on goal. The Green and White had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
• The Spartan defense got in the scoring act in the 73rd minute as defenders Dylan Marco and Brandon Holy combined for York's fourth goal. Holy found Marco with a pass that the freshman finished for his first collegiate goal. Senior Jack Mitzelfelt closed out the scoring in the 76th minute with his fourth goal of the year with Holy notching his second assist of the evening.
• York finished the game holding a 22-8 advantage in total shots including a 13-2 bulge in shots on goal. The Spartans also held a 7-3 margin in corner kicks.
 
Spartan Notes
The Spartans are now 10-0 all-time against the Blazers … sophomore Matt Martin now leads the team in scoring with 11 points on four goals and three assists … Jack Mitzelfelt is now tied with Martin for the team lead in goals with four … Brandon Holy and Tyler Howlett are now tied for the team lead with four assists each … freshman keeper Jake Bono improves to 3-3 for the year … the five goals for the Spartans were their second-highest total of the year, one goal behind the six scored against Lancaster Bible … the 22 shots were a season-high for the Green and White … the 13 shots on goal were a season high for York … the Spartans are now 3-5 on the road … York will conclude their regular season with a pair of home games at Graham Field next week.

The Spartans return home on Tuesday night to take on Albright in a MAC Commonwealth contest. Game time at Graham Field is set for 7:00 pm.
