Volleyball's Win Streak Snapped on Virginia Road Trip

A pair of 3-0 losses to Averett and Marymount ends York's six-game win streak

ARLINGTON, Va. - The York women's volleyball team saw their six-match win streak come to an end with a pair of 3-0 losses to Averett and Marymount on Saturday at Marymount's tri-match.

Match One
Team Records

York 6-2
Averett 6-5

How It Happened
  • Averett jumped on York with a 25-17 first victory. The Cougars took control of the set with a 7-0 run to take a 15-7 lead aided by four Spartan miscues during that span. York failed to gain traction the rest of the way as Averett never let the lead dip below four.
  • The Cougars rolled to a 25-14 win in the second set as they hit a staggering .423 as a team with an 80% sideout percentage. Madison Kauffmann and Megan Rizzi combined for 10 of York's 11 kills in the set as each recorded five.
  • An early deficit proved costly for York as Averett ultimately claimed a 25-21 win in the third set. The Cougars put York in a tough spot early as they jumped out to a 10-2 lead. The Spartans would go to win nine of the next 12 points to cut the deficit to two (13-11) with Morgan Nolte leading the way with three kills on that run. York failed to string together enough points the rest of the way to threaten Averett's lead as the Cougars claimed the match in three.

Match Two
Team Records

York 6-3
Marymount 5-5

How It Happened
  • Marymount hit .375 as a team on their way to a 25-18 first set win. The Saints forced York to battle from behind from the start as they opened the frame on a 9-3 run. The two sides went back and forth until a four-point Spartan rally, led by a pair of Claire Shorb kills, cut the York deficit to five. The Saints would go on to win the next two points which then sealed the set.
  • The Saints went on to edge the Spartans, 25-20, in a competitive second set. The two sides were neck-and neck for the majority of the set with the Spartan owning a 15-14 edge. But from that point, Marymount doubled up the Spartans the rest of the way (11-5) to take a two sets to none lead.
  • York put up a strong fight in the third set in an attempt at a comeback bid, but ultimately fell, 29-27, in a high scoring affair. Tied 18-18, the Saints broke open a 23-19 lead ona 5-1 run, but Megan Rizzi and Morgan Nolte combined for four team points on a 6-1 Spartan rally as York took a 25-24 lead. The two teams traded punches before Marymount posted three-straight kills to end the match.

Up Next
The Spartans return home Wednesday to face Messiah in a conference contest slated to start at 7 p.m.
