Field Hockey Rolls to Conference-Opening Win

Spartans post fifth shutout of the season in 5-0 win at LVC

ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Spartan field hockey squad opened MAC Commonwealth play with their fifth shutout of the season in a 5-0 triumph at Lebanon Valley on Saturday afternoon.

Team Records
(RV) York 5-1 (1-0 MACC)
Lebanon Valley 3-4 (0-1 MACC)

How It Happened
  • York was all over LVC out of the gates as the Spartans racked up an 8-0 shot margin and a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners in the opening corner. Dutchmen goalie Kayleigh Kmet and members of the LVC defense stopped the first six Spartan shots on goal, but York eventually kicked down the door late in the quarter, scoring twice in the final three minutes. Kat Knox tallied the first goal for York as she punched it in from close range on a loose ball scramble. Hannah Huffman tallied the second as she finished off a pair of beautiful set up passes from Mya Gerena and Maggie Spadafora.
  • Knox tallied her second of the day to give York a 3-0 lead in the 20th minute of play. The freshman forward deeked her defender on the doorstep and slipped a shot low past a sprawling Kmet.
  • York did not allow a shot on goal in the first 30 minutes of play as the Spartans dominated possession. The Green and White owned a 14-2 shot margin with a 7-0 advantage in penalty corners at halftime.
  • Maycee Collison extended the Spartan lead to 4-0 just four minutes into the second half as she ripped a shot from the point past Kmet on a penalty corner.
  • Brooke Cordisco followed up Collison's tally with another laser five minutes later to swell the lead to 5-0. The Dutchmen attempted to clear the ball out wide, but a lurking Cordisco intercepted the ball in the right slot and sent it flying back into the cage.
  • Goalie Kaitlyn Wallace entered the game in relief of Belle Fields in the 39th minute and helped preserve the shutout with a pair of saves in the final two minutes of the third quarter as the Dutchmen put their only shots on target for the day. Wallace did not have to make another save the rest of the way as her defense kept her clean, but the Spartan goalie was active in disrupting a few passes in the circle to keep LVC off the board.

Notes
The Spartans have now won the last two meetings with the Dutchmen as York improves to 5-9-4 in the all-time series … York has out-scored its opponents 20-1 on the season with the lone goal allowed to #2 Johns Hopkins … since allowing that goal to the Blue Jays in the third game of the year, the Spartans have yet to allow a goal in the last 204:09 of play … freshman Kat Knox posted her first multi-goal game of the season with her two tallies as she moved into a tie with Katie Martino for the team lead (4).

Up Next
The Spartans return home Tuesday for a non-conference contest against Susquehanna beginning at 7 p.m.
