Women's Tennis Fall to LVC in Commonwealth Championship Match

Dutchmen edge Spartans 5-3 in title match

ANNVILLE, PA – The Lebanon Valley women's tennis team gained a measure of revenge as the Dutchmen downed the York College Spartans 5-3 in the MAC Commonwealth championship match on Sunday in Annville.

The Spartans earned their first ever MAC Championship in 2021 at the hands of LVC as York edged the Dutchmen 5-4 last May. Lebanon Valley finished the year undefeated against Commonwealth opponents as they earned the automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division III Tournament.

The loss snaps York's season-high seven match win streak as York ends the year 9-5. LVC will carry a 12-match win streak into the NCAA Tournament as they are now 15-4 overall.

The Dutchmen got on the board first as the third doubles team of Sarah Kramer and Eliana Shenk bested the Spartan tandem of Morrissey Walsh and Kelsey Sheets 8-5 for the first point of the match. The Dutchmen took a 2-0 lead as Jacquelyn McBride and Nicole Honrade combined to edge Elsa Oestermarker and Lauren Ostermann 8-5 in the first doubles match. The Spartan doubles team of Michaela Sentz and Brianna Rohrer earned a solid 8-3 second doubles win over Meredith Haas and Madison Poladian as York trailed 2-1 heading to singles play.

LVC got off to a good start in singles play as Shenk beat Sheets 6-1, 6-1 in the sixth singles match to take a 3-1 lead. The lead grew to 4-1 as Honrade beat Sentz 6-2, 6-2 in the second singles match. Walsh picked up York's second point as she beat Poladain 6-3, 6-4 in the fifth singles match. Rohrer drew the Spartans to 4-3 as she outlasted Sarah Kramer 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 in the fourth singles match.

McBride ended the match as she picked up the decisive fifth point as she downed Oestermarker 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-3 in the first singles match to secure the championship for the Dutchmen.

Walsh led the Spartans in 2022 as she went 13-2 in singles play including 12-1 in dual matches. She went 2-0 at the fourth singles slot and 10-1 in the fifth singles position while she was 7-0 in MAC Commonwealth play. Walsh will head into her senior year with an 11 match win streak.

Rohrer also had an outstanding year as she went 12-4 overall while she also went 7-0 in league play. Rohrer was 1-1 in third singles matches and 9-2 in fourth singles play.

Oestermarker was the third Spartan who reached double figures in wins as she finished 10-5 at first singles.

The Spartans now must say good bye to a very talented group of seniors as Lauren Ostermann, Brianna Rohrer, Kelsey Sheets, and Chloe Doyle have played their final matches for the Green and White. The Spartan returners will have a brand new facility to play in on West Campus as construction has begun on a yet unnamed facility that will debut in the fall.
