How It Happened
Stevenson already scored more goals (1) in the first 3:55 of Saturday's contest than they did in all of last year's title game when Matt Lachman gave the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead. Lachman's tally started a run of four back-and-forth goals over the next two minutes capped by an Ethan Greene tally which knotted up the score, 2-2, with 9:22 left in the first. Dylan Wolf scored with 5:55 left as the Spartans took a 3-2 edge out of one quarter of play.

Ben Mayer and Jacob Wilhelm each scored early in the second as York scored four-straight to take a 5-2 edge less than five minutes into the period. Lucas Ingley stopped the bleeding with a goal less than a minute later, but Will Harnick and Eric Ranck tallied goals 1:35 apart as York led 7-3 at halftime.

York stifled the Mustangs in the second quarter with a 17-3 shot advantage, including an 11-1 margin in shots on goal. Stevenson goalie Marc Poust minimized the damage as he compiled seven saves in the second period alone.

The two teams put together a scoring display in the third quarter as they combined for 11 goals in the period. Stevenson displayed superb efficiency as they scored seven goals on just nine toal shots. The Mustangs scored three unanswered in the final five minutes of the period, including two by Shane Ford, as they cut the deficit to one, 11-10, heading into the fourth.

Stevenson rode their momentum into the fourth and scored twice more in the first five minutes of the period to take their first lead, 12-11, since midway through the first quarter. The Mustangs squandered away their next two possessions, which opened the door for the Spartans. York pumped in three-straight goals in less than two minutes to take a 14-12 lead with 3:34 left to play.

Josh Brannan got one back for the Mustangs to cut the deficit to 14-13 with 1:48 left. After York won the ensuing faceoff, the two teams traded possessions with Mason Smith causing the turnover and collecting the ground ball which set up the Ben Mayer game-clinching tally with 16 seconds left.
