YORK, PA – The York College women's tennis squad earned their way into the 2022 MAC Commonwealth championship match with a 5-1 semifinal win over Alvernia on Tuesday in York.
The Spartans have now won seven straight as they will be making their second straight championship game appearance. The tournament match was played to result.
The Spartans improve to 9-4 while the Golden Wolves end their season at 11-5.
The Spartans got two points handed to them early as Alvernia had a third doubles forfeit and a sixth singles forfeit as the Green and White had the lead before play started.
The teams split the remaining two doubles matches as Alvernia's Leah Bouchard teamed with Lily Summerson to outlast
Lauren Ostermann and
Michaela Sentz 8-7 (7-4) in the first doubles match.
Brianna Rohrer and
Morrissey Walsh combined to bounce Alvernia's Jillian Laughman and Sabrina Heck 8-3 in the second doubles match as York took a 2-1 lead to singles play.
The first, second, and third singles matches would all go unfinished as the Spartans locked up the match with wins from Walsh at fourth singles and Sheets at fifth singles. Walsh notched a 6-0, 6-0 win over Heck in the fourth singles match. Sheets bageled Milannys Rivera 6-0. 6-0 in the fifth singles match.
Eleanor Beck won the sixth singles match by forfeit.
The Spartans will hit the road on Saturday to face Lebanon Valley in the championship match in Annville, PA. The Dutchmen are the last team to beat the Spartans as LVC won the regular season match 7-2 on April 2. The team teams went down to the wire last May in York for the 2021 title which the Spartans won, securing their first conference championship in program history.
