YORK, PA – The York College women's tennis squad continued their late season run with their sixth straight run, downing Alvernia University 7-2 in MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday in York.
The Spartans earned the second in next week's MAC Commonwealth championship tournament as they will host Alvernia on Tuesday afternoon in the semifinals.
The Spartans improve to 8-4 overall and 6-1 in the league while the Golden Wolves fall to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
York captured two of the three doubles points to seize the early lead.
Elsa Oestermarker and
Lauren Ostermann combined to roll to an 8-1 win over Leah Bouchard and Lily Summerson in the first doubles contest.
Morrissey Walsh and
Eleanor Beck blanked Rachel Rineer and Dareen Oestermarker kicked off singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 first singles win over Bouchard. Alvernia's Jillian Laughman outlasted
Michaela Sentz 6-4, 6-3 in the second singles contest.
The Spartans would win the remaining four singles matches, all in straight sets. Ostermann recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rineer in the third singles contest.
Brianna Rohrer bounced Summerson 6-2, 6-0 in the fourth singles match. Walsh beat Jackelyn Mercado 6-2, 6-4 in the fifth singles match while senior
Kelsey Sheets closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-1 sixth singles win.
The Spartans and Golden Wolves square off on Tuesday afternoon in the tournament semifinals. Game time will be determined on Monday.
