Reynolds' Last-Minute Tally Lifts #5 Spartans to Opening Day Win

Gunnar Reynolds netted the decisive goal with 51 seconds left to cap off his hat trick in an 8-7 win over W&L

YORK, Pa. - The No. 5 York men's lacrosse team clinched an 8-7 win on opening day over Washington & Lee with a last-minute tally at snowy, wind-blown Kinsley Field.

Gunnar Reynolds netted the game-winning goal with 51 seconds left in the fourth quarter to cap a 4-1 run by York over the final 22 minutes. The Reynolds goal was preceded by a turnover on a failed clear attempt by the Generals with two minutes to go. Vinny Facciponti went on to win the ensuing face-off following the go-ahead goal with Ethan Greene scooping up the ground ball from his wing position as York bled out the clock to clinch the victory.

Team Records
#5/6 York 1-0
RV/NR Washington & Lee 0-2

How it happened
Senior attackman Eric Ranck cashed in on York's first possession just 42 seconds after Vinny Facciponti won the game's opening face-off. The Spartan offense went silent over the next three possessions, plagued by turnovers on the last three, which led ultimately to a run of two unanswered goals by the Generals to end the first quarter. The Spartans put together a flurry of shots in the final two minutes, but came up empty each time as trailed, 2-1, at the end of one quarter of play

The Generals pumped in a third unanswered goal on their second possession of the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead as the offensive woes and uncharacteristic sloppy play hampered York. Then the penalties began to rack up on the Generals and although the Spartans did not cash in with the extra-man advantage, they did manage to score twice shortly after penalties expired to pull even, 3-3, with just under six minutes to play in the second quarter. Freshman attackman Ben Mayer did the damage for York as he scored twice to even up the score.

Washington & Lee turned the ball over on their next four possessions, but the Spartans could not solve General goalie Nick Spagnoletti to take advantage of the W&L miscues. York's inability to finish on at least one of those possessions proved costly as a Spartan turnover with under 90 seconds left in the first half turned into a goal for the Generals with just three ticks left on the clock as W&L took a 4-3 lead into halftime.

After some halftime adjustments, the two teams went blow for blow in the third quarter with York's veteran attackmen doing the heavy lifting. Junior Will Harnick pumped in his first goal of the season early in the quarter, followed by a pair of goals by graduate student Gunnar Reynolds who was set up both times by Mayer to tie the score, 6-6, with 5:04 left in the third. The Generals would have the final say before the quarter was over as Hillis Burns slipped a shot past Jack Michael with just six seconds left.

The Spartan defense rebounded from the late third-quarter tally and bowed its neck through the final 15 minutes as Washington & Lee failed to get on the board. Michael racked up three saves and the Spartans disrupted five W&L clear attempts as the Generals squandered away 10 possessions in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Eben Ordakowski netted the equalizer with six minutes left after receiving an assist from Mayer.

York completely stifled the Generals through the final six minutes as W&L did not register a single shot. With momentum building on York's side, Reynolds seized the opportunity and scored the game-winner on a turnaround shot from the left slot that caught  Spagnoletti by surprise as the ball whizzed past his head into the net.

Up next
The Spartans will take a brief hiatus and return to action on March 2 at home against Arcadia in a MAC crossover matchup.
