Men's Basketball Downs Dickinson in Season Opener

The Spartans place three in double figures in the 66-57 win

CARLISLE, PA – The York College men's basketball team successfully kicked off their 2022-23 season with a 66-57 win on the road at Dickinson College on Tuesday night in Carlisle.
York placed three players in double figures in the win while they also forced 21 Dickinson turnovers.
The Spartans improve to 1-0 while the Red Devils fall to 0-1.
 
How It Happened
• The Spartans got off to a quick start as they jumped out to a 5-0 start. The lead grew to eight on a Chris Miers lay-up with 16:24 left in the opening half. The Red Devils cut the Spartan lead to three twice with the second time coming at 14-11. The Green and White then fashioned a 9-2 spurt to take a 23-13 lead. Dickinson hit back-to-back threes, with both buckets coming late in the shot clock, to trim the Spartan lead to four at 23-19 with 5:10 left in the half. The Spartans responded emphatically with a 7-0 spurt to push the lead to 11. York would settle for a 32-23 lead at the break.
• Dickinson came out of the half with a quick 5-0 spurt to trim York's lead to four. Kai Cipalla drilled a three pointer and then hit a lay-up to push the York lead back to nine just over three minutes into the half. Cipalla struck again with a big three with 10:12 left in the game, pushing the lead to 13 at 48-35.
• The Spartan lead grew to a game-high 15 points four times, the final time coming on a pair of Miers free throws with 2:35 left. The Red Devils made one last dash to cut into the Spartan lead. Dickinson drew to within eight on an Isaiah Edmond three-point play with 35 seconds left in the game. The Spartans hit three of four from the line over the final 26 seconds to secure the nine-point win.

The Spartans went 16-for-22 from the line for the game while the Red Devils were just 8-for-12 from the line … York held a 33-29 edge on the glass … York scored 26 points off the 21 Dickinson turnovers … The Spartans notched 11 steals … York held Dickinson to 40.4% shooting from the floor … York was slightly better from three as they were 8-for-21 while Dickinson was 7-for-21.

York is now 8-2 in season openers under head coach Matt Hunter including seven straight wins in season openers … York is now 15-8 all-time against Dickinson as they have won six straight in the series … York had seven players make their Spartan debut as Jayden Rowe, Kai Cipalla, Pat Gilhool, Shawn Barclay, Tate Landis, Andrew Gorkowski, and Nick Schroeder all played their first games for York … Cipalla had a perfect night shooting night as he was 5-for-5 from the floor including 2-for-2 from three while he also went 4-for-4 from the line … sophomore Jackson Mascari set a pair of new career highs with five assists and three steals in the win … graduate student Sean Kelly tied his career high in rebounds with six in the win.
 
Up Next
The Spartans head to the University of Scranton for the Hilton Scranton Invitational this weekend. The Spartans open the tournament on Friday night at 7:30 pm when they face Manhattanville. That game will follow the Scranton versus Houghton first round contest. Saturday's consolation game will tip at 2:00 pm followed by the 4:00 pm championship game.
