Spartans Pull Away in Second Half for Semifinal Win

York scores three second half goals in five minutes to defeat LVC, 5-1

YORK, Pa. - Second-seed York women's soccer scored a season-high five goals in a runaway 5-1 victory over third-seed Lebanon Valley in the MAC Commonwealth Semifinal on Wednesday night at Graham Field.

York clung to a one-goal before pumping in three unanswered goals in a span of five minutes midway through the second half with Anna Morton tallying the last two to put the finishing touches on the big win.

How It Happened
  • Six minutes in, LVC almost had an own goal as Kyra Rishell played a pass back to goalkeeper Jocelyn Umana. The ball took a slight errant bounce just as Umana went to kick it back up the field which caused her to swing and miss. Fortunately, for LVC the ball hit the left post and rebounded directly to Umana who was able to cover it up.
  • The Spartans kept coming through the first 30 minutes of the game and kicked the door in with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart beginning in the 33rd minute. The first tally was by Ashlynn Weger on a corner set piece who was set up by Erin Snyder with a head pass following the corner insert by Sabrina McGuigan. Moments later, Rori Englert sprung Makayla Harper free from the LVC defense with a beautiful through ball which set up Harper with a one-on-one with Umana and the Spartan finished for her eight goal of the season.
  • The Dutchmen did not take long to respond as they cut the York lead to one in the 37th minute. Kaitlyn Brumbaugh knocked it in after the ball was deflected off a Spartan defender when it was played into the box.
  • York came out of the second half break flying and compiled three shots and three corners in the first six minutes, but came away with nothing to show for it. The Spartans racked up two more shots and corners over the next 15 minutes while holding LVC to just two shots through the first 20 minutes of the second half.
  • Eventually the dam broke on the Dutchmen in the 67th minute and York poured on three-straight tallies in a five-minute stretch. Alyssa Russell and Anna Morton scored two of the three goals on corner set pieces, while Morton also sandwiched a goal in between the two corners with a tally in the 69th minute on a Harper rebound.
  • York limited LVC to just one shot in the final 31 minutes of play as the Spartans dominated possession. The Dutchmen's lone shot during that span came in the final minute by Brumbaugh, but Morgan Joyce was there on the end line to deny Brumbaugh of sneaking one in late.

Up Next
