Women's Soccer Season Ends in NCAA First Round

DALLAS, Pa. - A memorable York women's soccer season came to a close with a 2-0 loss to Western New England in the NCAA First Round on Saturday night hosted by Misericordia.

York 12-5-4
Western New England 14-5-2

How It Happened
  • The Spartans had the jump in their legs from the start and brought early pressure through the first 10-plus minutes. Anna Morton led numerous opportunities deep into WNE territory, but the Spartans just could get the break they needed for a clean look on net.
  • The Golden Bears had limited chances through the first 14 minutes, but with one corner set piece in the 15th minute, they capitalized. After the ball was played in from the corner, it ping-ponged around the box, finally settling on the foot of Danielle McCarthy who finished to the left corner through traffic to put WNE out front early.
  • In the 24th minute, Morton had a slight step on her defender up the left side and created shooting space for a shot which forced a great diving save by WNE keeper, Brianna Carroll. That would hold up as York's lone shot on goal for the first half.
  • The Spartans again brought severe pressure to start the second half and it nearly paid off in the 49th minute. Morton slipped a pass into the box from the left side and after spinning on the wet turf, the ball eventually scooted out the back side. Alyssa Russell managed to run on to with a defender draped all over her and still managed to get a shot off, but her attempt was turned away by another WNE defender on the end line.
  • York had a bounty of chances early in the second half with five shots and two in the first seven minutes, with one shot saved and two blocked. After that early fleury, the opportunities diminished and WNE went on to tack on another.
  • The Golden Bears took a commanding two-goal advantage with a Alison VanVolkenburg penalty kick in the 72nd minute. VanVolkenburg shot high right as Jacqueline Keogh dove the opposite direction and WNE could sense victory.
  • The Spartans threw everything they had at the net down the stretch as they generated seven shots in the final 15 minutes. Three were saved, but none could find their way home as the magical York season came to an end.

Notes
The Spartans are now 3-4 in four NCAA Postseason appearances with a record of 2-2 in neutral site matchups … York ends an outstanding season with their first-ever at-large berth to the NCAA tournament and recorded their first back-to-back double-digit win seasons since 2008-09 … the Spartans are 25-11-4 in the past two seasons with a pair of wins over top-25 teams and two MAC Commonwealth title game appearances.
