Outstanding Field Hockey Season Comes to a Close at #1 Salisbury

The Spartans dropped their second 1-0 decision at Salisbury this year

SALISBURY, MD – Top-ranked Salisbury got a third quarter goal to hold off the York College Spartan field hockey squad, 1-0, in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament in Salisbury, Maryland on Saturday morning.

The Spartans see their stellar 2022 campaign come to a close with a mark of 16-6 while Salisbury advances to the national quarterfinals on Sunday with a mark of 18-0. They are the last remaining undefeated team in Division III field hockey and the tournament's overall top seed.

How It Happened
• The Spartans played a great first quarter as they had the better of the play. York out shot the Sea Gulls 5-0 while they also held a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners in the opening 15 minutes of play. The Spartans inability to score on any of their first quarter chances would come back to haunt the Green and White.
• The second quarter was very evenly played. The Gulls had a 2-0 shot advantage with one of those shots coming on goal as Belle Fields registered a save on a Kaitlyn DeModna shot 1:01 before the halftime break.
• The Sea Gulls came out of the halftime break rolling as they secured a penalty corner just 35 seconds in the half. The Spartans stymied the Gulls in the first corner but Salisbury earned another corner at the 31:04 mark. Mack Dinopoulos inserted to McKenzie Mitchell in the middle of the circle. Mitchell slid a pass to Allie Davis who hit an elevated shot that eluded Fields and found the back of the net for the goal. The goal was her team-leading 19th of the year and would prove to be the difference in the game.
• The fourth period found the Sea Gulls content to play keep away and run time off the clock. The Gulls had a break away chance with 6:09 left but McKenna Horner's shot was high as the Spartans avoided going down 2-0. The Spartans got a corner with 2:41 remaining in the game. York got the ball to Hannah Huffman who blasted a shot that was blocked and the Sea Gulls would be able to clear the ball, limiting the Spartans' opportunity to one shot. Salisbury was able to kill off the final two minutes and earn the second round win.
