GREENSBORO, NC – The York College men's golf squad had a rough first round at the loaded O'Briant Jensen Memorial Tournament on Monday at The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Spartans finished Monday's round in 17
th of 18 teams as York shot a team score of 326. That score is one better than their worst round of the year which came at the Hood Invitational, an event they won on October 11.
Christopher Newport has the team lead as the Captains shot a blistering 285. CNU holds a seven stroke lead over top-ranked Emory heading into Tuesday's second and final round. Methodist and Averett are tied for third at 293 while Greensboro rounds out the top five teams at 295.
Senior
Riley Rohlfs was York's top finisher on Monday as he shot a seven-over-par 78, the best Spartan score by four strokes. Rohlfs shot a 38 on the front and a 40 on the back. Rohlfs had a team-best three birdies on the day. He heads into Tuesday tied for 48
th in the 102-player field.
Gavin Ganter was the next Spartan as he shot an 82 to finish tied for 73
rd. Ganter shot a 41 on the front and another 41 on the back.
Senior
Nick Fioravante and freshman
Jacob Fripp were the next two Spartan scorers for Monday's first round as they both shot 83. Fioravante shot a 41 on the front nine and 42 on the back nine while Fripp was the opposite with a 42 on the front and a 41 on the back. Fripp did record an eagle on the par five tenth hole.
Sophomore
Jason Velez was the Spartans' fifth tournament participant. He shot an 86 to finished 94
th in the first round.
The Spartans will begin their final round of the fall on Tuesday morning for the second round of the tournament. The Green and White will tee off at 9:00 am in Greensboro.
