Spartans Fall 3-1 to Stevenson in Final Home Match

YORK, Pa. - The Spartans surrendered a 3-1 victory to MAC Commonwealth-leading Stevenson Wednesday night in their final in Wolf Gym this season.

York put the Mustangs in a hole by taking the first set, 25-20, but the Mustangs rallied back to win the final three sets, 25-23, 25-20 and 25-8.

Stevenson 23-3 (6-0 MACC)
York 10-10 (2-4 MACC)

How It Happened
  • The Spartans came out strong and took set one, 25-20. The Mustangs edged out an early lead, 3-1, but three-consecutive Megan Wolf service aces fueled a seven-point which put the Spartans in the lead for good. Stevenson would threaten late as they cut the deficit to two (22-20), but York claimed the next three points to seal the win. Megan Rizzi led all players with seven kills in the first set on a .600 attack percentage, while Abby Diehl assisted on 13 of York's 15 kills.
  • Stevenson edged York, 25-23, in a gritty second set battle. The Spartans scored first and ran up 15 points before the Mustangs finally caught up. Tied, 15-15, the two sides traded blows the rest of the way until a pair of Spartan miscues ultimately resulted in a Stevenson victory.
  • The Mustangs prevailed, 25-20, in a pivotal third set that had 10 ties and eight lead changes. A six-point Stevenson run late ultimately made the difference in an otherwise closely-contested set as the Mustangs broke open a 21-16 advantage with that run. York hit just .034 in the frame with Claire Shorb pacing all players with four kills.
  • Stevenson closed out the match in convincing fashion with a 25-8 whipping in the fourth set. Before the Spartans could blink, they were staring up at an 8-0 deficit which continued to snowball as York hit -.240 in the frame and went 6-for-24 in sideout opportunities.
