#13 Field Hockey Posts 10th Shutout of the Year

Spartans roll past Hood 5-0 on Wednesday

FREDERICK, MD – The York College Spartan field hockey team rolled past Hood College 5-0 in MAC Commonwealth action on Wednesday afternoon in Frederick, Maryland.
The Spartans, who are ranked 13th in the nation, improve to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in the league. The Blazers fall to 4-10 overall and 0-6 in the league.
The clean sheet extends their school record for shutouts to 10 for the year.
 
How It Happened
• The Spartans wasted little time in getting on the board as York struck for a goal a mere 29 second into the game. Maggie Spadafora slid a pass over to Riley Buschert who finished the chance for the 1-0 lead. The Spartans would fire off five more shots in the quarter as they took a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes of play.
• York got back-to-back goals early in the second quarter. Buschert assisted on the Spartans second goal as Katie Martino struck for her team-leading 12th goal of the year 5:20 into the quarter. Maycee Collison scored a mere 65 seconds later to make it 3-0 York. The Spartans out shot the Blazers 10-0 in the quarter while they also had five corners.
• The Green and White increased the lead in the third with two more goals. Buschert continued her big day with her second goal off an assist from Martino 2:25 into the second half. Freshman Kat Knox closed out the scoring with her tenth goal of the year with 4:08 remaining in the third. Anna Simoes earned the assist on the goal.
• The Spartans continued to press the Blazers in the fourth quarter but failed to put one home. They out shot Hood 6-1 and held a 4-0 margin in corners. Overall, the Spartans out shot the Blazers 31-1 including 22-1 in shots on goal. York had 21 corners in the win. Hood goalie Richana Brown kept the Blazers in the game wth 14 saves.

York is now 20-0-1 all-time against the Blazers as they have won 18 straight matches against Hood … York clinched a spot in the upcoming MAC Championship tournament with their win on Wednesday … the Spartans now have ten shutouts in 15 games … York has allowed just eight goals in 15 games while they have scored 42 … York has allowed a combined three shots in their last two games … York held an opponent under five shots for the ninth time this year … York did not concede a corner for the first time this year …York earned 21 corners in the match, their highest total of the year … the Spartans put 22 shots on goal, their second highest total of the year (25 at Wilkes – September 3) … junior Riley Buschert tied her career high with two goals while her five total points also ties her career high (vs. Lebanon Valley, 2021) … Buschert is now the third Spartans to each double figures in scoring for the year with 13 points on four goals and five assists … Katie Martino continues to lead York in scoring with 26 points on 12 goals and two assists while Kat Knox has 21 points on 10 goals and one assist … York is second in the conference in total goals with 42 while their scoring margin of 2.27 is tops in the conference … York is best in the league in defensive scoring average as opponents are averaging just 0.53 goals per game … York is third in corners earned at 133 total … Martino is tied for the most goals in the Commonwealth while she is second in points and tied for first in game-winning goals (4) … sophomore goalie Belle Fields continues to lead the conference in goals against average at 0.62 and save percentage at .805 … Fields also has five full shutouts to her credit for the year.
 
Up Next
The Spartans return home on Saturday when they host Eastern University in a non-conference contest. Game time is slated for 1:00 pm at Kinsley Field.
