WAYNESBORO, PA – The York College men's golf squad had a strong showing on Saturday at the opening round of the Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic at Waynesboro Country Club in Waynesboro, PA.
The Spartans finished the day in third place of the 21-team field. York shot 299 as they trail host Gettysburg by four strokes as the Bullets shot 295. McDaniel is one stroke in front of the Spartans at 298 while Franklin and Marshall (300) is fourth followed by Alvernia (303) to round out the top five teams.
Seniors
Nick Fioravante and
Riley Rohlfs had big days for York as they both fired one-over-par 73's as they are tied for fifth place in the individual tournament. Fioravante and Rohlfs are four strokes back of individual leader Ryan McGarry of McDaniel (69).
Fioravante posted eight pars and one bogey on the opening nine for a 37. His back nine was a little more adventurous with one bogey, one double, three birdies and four pars for an even-par 36 en-route to his 73.
Rohlfs opened his day with a double bogey on one but he bounced back with five pars, one birdie and a pair of bogeys to shoot an opening nine 39. He was great on the back nine as he had two birdies and seven pars for a two-under 34 on the homeward nine.
Sophomore
Matthew Salter was York's third finisher as he tied for ninth after day one with a two-over-par 74. Salter went two-over for the front nine with a pair of birdies, four bogeys and three pars. He followed that with an even-par 36 on the back nine with two bogeys, two birdies and five pars.
Sophomore
Gavin Ganter was York's fourth scorer for the day as he shot 79. Ganter had six pars and three bogeys for a three-over 39. He had two bogeys and a double on the back side for a 40. He is tied for 46
th in the 104-player field.
Freshman
Jacob Fripp made his collegiate debut in the tournament as he shot an 85. Fripp shot 45 on the front but settled in and shot 40 on the back nine as he is tied for 86
th overall.
The Spartans compete in day two of the tournament on Sunday as the action is slated for a 12:00 pm start at the Waynesboro Country Club.
