Wrestling Places 2nd in Pool B on Day One of Whitehill Duals

Spartans will compete in 5-8 bracket starting tomorrow

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The York wrestling team finished second in Pool B with a record of 1-1 in round robin competition Friday on day one of the Budd Whitehill National Duals hosted by Lycoming. The Spartans now move into the 5-8 place bracket as competition resumes tomorrow.

The Spartans opened the day with a 31-12 loss to Ohio Northern, but rebounded with a 27-18 win over Ferrum. Eric Hutchinson and Camden Farrow led the way for York as both Spartans went 2-0 on the day.

How It Happened
  • Jared Kuhns gave the Spartans the lead out of the gates with a 10-4 victory at 125. Kuhns scored takedowns in the first and second periods, and compiled four near fall points throughout the course of the bout against Colin Mellott.
  • Ohio Northern went on to score bonus points at 133 and 141 to take a 10-3 advantage. The Panthers then extended their lead to 17-3 with two more victories at 149 and 157 as they ripped off four-straight wins.
  • Sixth-ranked Eric Hutchinson stopped the ONU run with a 3-1 victory at 165. With the bout tied 1-1 deep into the third period, Hutchinson managed to get a takedown with six seconds left to secure the two-point victory over Jordan Hardrick.
  • ONU went on to win three of the final four bouts, scoring bonus points in two of those matches.
  • Camden Farrow gave the Spartans their third and final win of the dual with a fall at 197. Farrow had a 6-1 lead heading into the third period before he reversed from bottom to start the third and converted that reversal into his eighth fall of the season.

How It Happened
  • The Spartans led 12-9 on the scoreboard after the first five bouts, but Ferrum owned a 3-2 advantage in bout wins.
  • Jared Kuhns nearly pulled off a comeback win at 125 over JD McMillian. Kuhns trailed 10-2 after the first and went on to out-score McMillian 6-2 in the final two periods, but the Spartan eventually ran out of time as he surrendered the opening bout to Ferrum.
  • Blake Shalbert made his return to the mat after suffering an injury at TCNJ on Nov. 19, 2021. The Spartan senior showed great poise and effort as he battled to a narrow 4-1 loss at 141 lbs.
  • Jared Bair gave York a big lift with a bonus-point victory at 149. Bair battled back from a 3-2 first period deficit with a takedown in the second, which he then converted into a pin. Bair now leads the team with nine falls on the season.
  • York won three of the final five bouts of the dual with forfeits at 174 and 197. Eric Hutchinson opened the second half of the dual with a narrow victory at 165. After surrendering a takedown in the opening minute, Hutchinson countered with a reversal and two swipes, and ended up exiting the first period with a 6-4 lead. The Spartan escaped from bottom to start the second and added another takedown to take a 9-5 lead into the third. Elijah Martin made a late push at a comeback as he escaped from bottom in the third, but was not able to get his offense going until he scored a takedown with three seconds left.

Up Next
The Spartans return to the mats tomorrow as they will compete in the 5-8 place bracket. York will open the day against conference and regional foe Wilkes in the semifinal round with the winner advancing to the fifth-place match.
