Spartan Offense Keeps Rolling in 6-1 win at Elizabethtown

Collis scores twice as Spartans improve to 3-0

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – The York College field hockey team kept their early season roll going as they posted a 6-1 non-conference victory at Elizabethtown on Wednesday afternoon.
The Spartans have outscored their three 2021 opponents by a combined count of 15-2 as they have started the season 3-0 for the first time since 2016 when the Green and White got off to a 5-0 start.

How It Happened
• After the first five minutes of the game were back and forth, the Spartans started applying consistent pressure to the Elizabethtown defense. Maggie Spadafora had a shot cleared off the line by Elizabethtown defender Maeve Keeney in the ninth minute of the game. York then had three straight penalty corners. On the third corner, Rachel Della opened the scoring as she poked in a shot off a scrum in front of the goal to give York the 1-0 lead with 2:05 left in the opening quarter.
• York got off the a great start in the second quarter as senior Sam Collis fired a shot between Blue Jay goalie Angelina Giglio-Tos's legs that found the back of the cage just 1:07 into the second period. The Spartans had a three minute stretch where they got three straight corners. York then made it 3-0 when Hayley Taylor inserted a corner to Riley Buschert. Buschert hit a pass toward the back post that Taylor batted down into the goal for her second tally of the year.
• The Spartans out shot Elizabethtown 8-1 in the first half and held a 6-1 edge in penalty corners.
• York struck early in the third quarter as Maycee Collison tapped in a Maggie Spadafora pass inside the right post for her first collegiate goal. Collison's goal came just 22 second into the second half. After another flurry of Spartan shots on the Blue Jay goal, Hannah Huffman made it 5-0 as she flicked in a back handed shot just 3:25 into the third quarter. The Blue Jays had two shots and two penalty corners over a three-minute span in the third but York responded with three shots and a penalty corner as the Spartans took a 5-0 led to the final quarter.
• The Green and White notched their final goal of the night in the 56th minute as Collis recorded her second goal of the game off a pass from Carrie Shuey. Shuey fired a pass from the top of the circle and Collis redirected the ball into the goal as York took a 6-0 lead. The Blue Jays broke up the shut out 24 seconds after Collis' goal as Grace Hussey hit a shot from the middle of the circle that snuck into the goal for her first goal of the year.

The Spartans improved to 9-27-1 all-time against the Blue Jays … the Spartans have won two straight in the series … senior Hayley Taylor has notched six points for her career and all six points have come in the first three games of 2021 … Taylor is tied with Sam Collis and Hannah Huffman for the team lead in points as they all have six through three games … the Spartans have had 10 different players score their 15 goals … Collis and Huffman have three each while Taylor has two … seven other Spartans have one goal each … the Spartans lead the MAC Commonwealth with 15 goals in three games while they also lead the league in total shots with 81 … York has drawn a league-high 38 penalty corners … Collis and Huffman are tied for third in the Commonwealth in goals scored.

The Spartans return to home on Saturday afternoon as they will kick off a three game homestand on Saturday against Bryn Mawr. The game is set for a 1:00 pm start at Kinsley Field.
