Volleyball Splits at E-Town Tri-Match

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The York volleyball team extended its win streak to three matches with a 3-1 victory over Penn State Berks before falling 3-1 to host Elizabethtown in a tri-match on Saturday.

Match One
Team Records
York 8-3
Penn State Berks 6-9

How It Happened
  • The Nittany Lions owned a 9-6 advantage in kills in the opening set, but the Spartans made up considerable ground by going 11-for-16 in sideout opportunities as compared to Berks' 11-for-25. Megan Wolf scored valuable points with her four service aces in the set and Jasmine Doguin led all players with seven digs as York took a 25-16 win.
  • The Spartans found themselves in the negative for hitting percentage in the second set (-.156) as the unforced errors piled up and Berks ran away with a 25-13 victory.
  • York opened up an early lead to start the second set and never looked back as the Green and White rolled to a 25-17 win. Abby Diehl assisted on nine of York's 12 kills in the third set as the Spartans went 12-for-17 in sideout opportunities.
  • The Spartans once again excelled at the sideout in the fourth set as they went 11-for-13 and minimized their attack errors. York also posted a match-high five service aces in the set to punctuate a 25-12 victory and capture the 3-1 match win.

Match Two
Team Records
York 8-4
Elizabethtown 8-3

How It Happened
  • After trailing by eight (11-3) in the first set and later by four when Elizabethtown reached the 20-point mark, York still managed to come all the way back and tie the set, 22-22, on a Jackie Karcz service ace. E-Town managed to record back-to-back kills to capture the 25-23 first set win, the Spartans showed a lot of guts after getting off to a tough start.
  • The Spartans kept the second set close for a while, but could get the necessary stops at the crucial moments down the stretch as the Blue Jays took the set, 25-17. Tyler Williams accounted for four of York's nine kills in the set, but the Spartans' eight attack errors plagued their offensive rhythm.
  • York put it all together in the third set and captured a 25-20 victory to avoid getting swept. The Spartans came up big on the sideout, going 14-for-20 and compiled a staggering nine total blocks, led by Sydney Wilber's three, including a solo.
  • The fourth set was tight all the way. Elizabethtown's 23-19 lead was the largest margin of the set, but York came storming back to tie the set, 24-24, led by a trio of kills from Megan Rizzi. Unfortunately, the next two kills belonged to E-town as the Blue Jays went on to win the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-1. Abby Diehl led all players with 10 assists in the fourth set while Rizzi paced York with six kills.
