Field Hockey Upsets #6 Diplomats

Spartans off to their best start since 2016

YORK, PA – The York College Spartan field hockey team got an overtime goal from Sam Collis as they upset sixth-ranked Franklin & Marshall, 2-1, in a non-conference contest in York. The game started on Wednesday night but a weather delay forced the game to be suspended until Thursday evening.
Collis' goal came 4:51 into overtime and pushed the Spartans' record to 5-0.

How It Happened
• The two teams went back and forth in the opening quarter of play as neither team had any significant advantage. The Spartans held a slight edge in total shots, 4-3, while both teams had a pair of penalty corners.
• The Diplomats tallied the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute of play. The Diplomats had a corner entered by Kat Horsley. Maddie Bickel had a shot from the top of the circle. Spartan goalie Kaitlyn Wallace registered the save but the rebounded found the stick of Carolina Riley who banged home the rebound for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Riley's second of the year.
• The Spartans notched the equalizer in the 37th minute as Maggie Spadafora took a pass above the top of the circle and dribbled the ball to the right wing. After pivoting back towards the center the of the circle, the freshman forward unleashed a high lob shot that found the upper left 90 of the cage, tying the game at one.
• About 40 seconds after Spadafora's goal, the game was suspended due to lightening in the area. Despite the two team's best efforts to restart the game, the game was called for the evening and resumed on Thursday evening after almost a 24 hour weather delay. The game was delayed with 7:50 left in the third quarter.
• Once the game resumed, the third quarter looked like to two teams were getting their feet back underneath them as the play was primarily in the midfield.
• The Spartans got rolling late in the fourth as they had three consecutive penalty corners with less than four minutes left. Unfortunately for York they had three shots that were either blocked or wide as the teams headed to the extra session.
• The Spartans had back-to-back penalty corners inside the first three minutes of the extra period but couldn't find the back of the cage. Hayley Taylor had back-to-back shots on rebounds but both were saved by Diplomat goalie Sydney Lippe.
• The Green and White finally got the goal they needed on their fourth penalty corner of the overtime as Taylor sent it in to Mya Gerena. Gerena settled the ball and sent it toward the cage from the top of the circle. Collis redirected the ball past Lippe to end the game and send the Spartan fans home happy.

The Spartans snapped a three game losing streak in the series … the Diplomats lead the all-time series 26-11 … the symmetry of the win for the Spartans is impressive … the last time York started 5-0, current Diplomat head coach Kaitlyn (Hamilton) Eager was the Spartans head coach in 2016 … the last time York started 5-0, the fifth win of the streak came against Franklin & Marshall when they blanked the Dips 2-0 at Kinsley Field … the best start in school history remains the 2000 squad that started the campaign 8-0 … the game-winning goal for Sam Collis was her first game-winner of the year and second of her Spartan career … the win for Spartan goalie Kaitlyn Wallace is her fifth of the year as she has matched the total from her freshman campaign in 2019 … the Spartans are the last remaining unbeaten team in the MAC Commonwealth.

The Spartans conclude their three-game home stand on Saturday as they welcome Widener University to Kinsley Field for York's first-ever Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth contest. Game time at Kinsley Field is slated for 1:00 pm.
