Spartans Fall in OT to Widener in Commonwealth Semifinal

YORK, Pa. - A golden goal by Widener less than three minutes into overtime ended York field hockey's season with a 1-0 loss in the MAC Commonwealth Semifinal on Wednesday night at Kinsley Field.

Team Records
No. 3 Widener 14-4
No. 2 York 14-5

How It Happened
  • The Pride dominated time of possession in the first quarter as the Spartans had possession on their offensive side of the midfield line just twice in the first seven minutes of play. Widener managed to get two shots off on a corner in the fourth minute, one of which was saved by Kaitlyn Wallace from close range. The two shots by the Pride in the opening quarter matched their total from the entire game in last meeting with the Spartans
  • York managed to level the possession as the opening quarter wore on. The Spartans had a pair of corners late in the period, but could not get a shot on target. Maggie Spadafora produced the best chance for either team in the closing minute of the quarter as she stole a pass at midfield and raced towards the goal on a breakaway. Spadafora took to the right side of the cage and attempted to cut back to the middle and shoot, but Widener goalie Kylie Haberstroh was there to make the diving save.
  • The Spartans had chances early in the second quarter, beginning with a great chance by Maycee Collison less than two minutes in that forced another outstanding diving save by Haberstroh. The Spartans later had corners in 21st and 22nd minutes, but could not get a shot on target. Hannah Huffman had a great look on the first corner from the top of the circle and sent a rocket towards through traffic that missed the cage left by a few inches
  • The Pride had chances late in the second quarter with a pair of corners less than a minute apart. Widener's Jesse Schlosser put a shot on target on the second corner attempt, but Wallace made a diving stick save as the two teams went into halftime scoreless.
  • The Spartan defense withstood a trio of Widener penalty corners 60 seconds apart in the later stages of the third quarter. York held the Pride shotless on those corners as the Spartan defenders hustled to get in position to snuff out Widener's opportunities. Reese Hardman had one of those defensive plays as she intercepted a pass to the middle on the second corner attempt.
  • York had multiple opportunities in the final three minutes of the third quarter. York had two corners and put three shots on target during that span, including a pair in the final minute, but Haberstroh had the answer each time for the Pride as the two teams played 45 scoreless minutes.
  • York had the advantage in scoring opportunities in the fourth quarter with a 2-1 edge in corners and a 2-1 advantage in shots, but could not finish the job. The key moment of regulation occurred in the final minute when Collison centered the ball from left to right in front of the goal mouth and Widener's Maddie Hoyer managed to swipe it away from the reach of Spadafora. If Hoyer had not gained possession, Spadafora had a prime scoring opportunity with Haberstroh caught out of position and sprawled out on the ground.
  • Less than three full minutes into overtime, the Pride put the game away as Madi Radnoff carried the ball into the right side of the circle and passed left underneath a diving Wallace where Jess Alba was waiting by herself on the backside for the easy tap-in game-winner.

Notes
