Cold Shooting Dooms Spartans against #14 Johns Hopkins

Spartans make just two threes as they shot 32% in the loss

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball squad couldn't overcome cold shooting as they fell to #14 Johns Hopkins University 70-49 in a non-conference tilt at Charles Wolf Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
The Spartans shot 32% from the field for the game and 2-for-18 from three (11.1%) in the loss to the nationally ranked Blue Jays.

Score: York 49, #14 Johns Hopkins 70
Records: York 2-2, #14 Johns Hopkins 2-1

How It Happened
• The Blue Jays got off to a good start as they scored the first eight points of the game. They pushed the lead to 10 at 15-5 before the Spartans started to claw their way back into the game. York ripped off six points to cut the Hopkins lead to four. That would be as close as York would get until David Giuliani hit a lay up with 6:07 left in the opening half to cut the Hopkins lead to 22-19.
• The Spartans trailed 24-21 after a pair of Logan Collins free throws at the 3:34 mark. The Blue Jays hit the Spartans with a 7-1 run to close the half as they took a 31-22 lead to the break.
• York got off to a solid start in the second half as they cut the Hopkins lead to six at 34-28 but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way. The Blue Jays used a 9-2 run to push the lead to 13 at 43-30.
• The Blue Jays continued to slowly build the lead until it reached 20 mid-way through the half. Hopkins pushed the lead to as many as 26 before settling for the 21-point win.

By The Numbers
The Spartans went 2-for-18 from three and that's the first time in 137 games that York has made less than three three-pointers in a game … that game came at Southern Virginia on December 5, 2015 when York went 1-for-14 from distance in the game at Buena Vista … the 49 points are the fewest for a Spartan squad since they scored 45 at Mary Washington, a span of 129 games in which the Spartans have scored 50 or more points in a game … York shot 32% (16-for-49) from the floor and 65.2% (15-for-23) from the free throw line … Hopkins converted 44.6% from the floor, 32% (8-for-25) from three and 75% (12-for-16) from the free throw line … Hopkins out rebounded the Spartans by 10, 41-31 … Hopkins won the points in the paint battle 32-26.

Spartan Notes
The Blue Jays have won the last two in the series but York still holds a 6-3 all-time lead in the series … York beat JHU 78-72 in the last meeting at Wolf Gymnasium on November 11, 2018 … the Spartans did make Blue Jay All-American Connor Delaney work for his 17 points as he was 6-for-17 from the floor including 2-for-10 from three while he was also 3-for-3 from the line … Delaney entered the game averaging 34.5 points per game including a 37 point outburst against Salisbury last week.
