Field Hockey Has Six Match Win Streak Snapped by CNU

Spartans begin MAC Commonwealth Tournament on Wednesday Night

Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Spartan field hockey squad saw their six-game win streak come to a halt as the CNU Captains bounced the Spartans 4-1 in the regular season finale for both squads. The Spartans have had two six-game win streaks this year with both coming to the end with a road loss.

How It Happened
• The Captains got to the Spartans early with a pair of goals in the opening 5:16 of the game. Lainey Pratzner opened the scoring just 3:39 into the game to give the Captains the 1-0 lead. Katie Abendschoen made it 2-0 off a pass from Marcella Sabbagh just over a minute and a half later as the Captains were in control of the match early.
• The Captains dominated the opening quarter as they out-shot York 7-0 in the opening 15 minutes of play.
• Sophomore Maycee Collison got the Spartans on the board in the 21st minute as she scored off assists from Hannah Huffman and Maggie Spadafora. ­­The Captains had their chances for more but Spartan goalie Kaitlyn Wallace made four saves in the quarter.
• The Captains had the better of the play in the third quarter as they added two more goals to extend their lead to 4-1.  Sabbagh scored off a Nyla Lewis pass in the 40th minute and Maddison Steele scored an unassisted tally in the 43rd minute. CNU held a 9-3 margin in third quarter shots and a 4-1 bulge in penalty corners.
• The Spartans managed to muster a little more offense in the fourth as they out-shot CNU 8-5 but they only put two of those attempts on cage in the scoreless quarter for both squads.
• CNU ended the game holding a 26-14 edge in shots and a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners. The Captains put 17 of their 26 shots on cage while York had just six shots on goal in the match.

The Spartans now 6-3 against CNU as the Captains have won three straight in the series … The Captains improve to 7-0 at home while York falls to 5-3 on the road … the Spartans surrendered a season-high 26 shots … the previous high for shots allowed was 10 in three different matches this year … in the Spartans' four losses, they have been outscored 13-3 … in York's 14 wins, they have outscored their opponents 51-7 … the Spartans finished the regular season with 14 wins, one short of the school record of 15 set in 1998 and the most since the 2009 team won 14.
 
Up Next
The Spartans begin their post-season on Wednesday evening as they host Widener University in the MAC Commonwealth semifinals. Game time at Kinsley Field is set for 7:00 pm. The winner advances to Saturday's MAC Commonwealth Championship game against the winner of the other semifinal game which will be hosted by top seeded Messiah.
