Big First Half Lifts Spartans to CAC Win at Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – The Spartans capitalized on a 22-point halftime lead to capture their fourth-straight Capital Athletic Conference victory in 67-53 win at Salisbury on Wednesday night. Molly Day led the way with 15 first-half points and finished as the game's leading scorer with 17 on the night.

How It Happened 

• Molly Day was picked as the player to watch on the pregame broadcast and did not disappoint as she accounted for six of York's first eight points. Day capped off the first-quarter scoring with a layup following three-straight rebounds by the Spartans on the possession as York took a 14-6 lead at the end of one quarter of play. 

• Day remained in rhythm to start the second quarter as she scored four of York's first five points to open the quarter. Kayla Ferris got in the on the action as she scored the next five points as York jumped out to a 24-11 lead with 6:05 left in the quarter.

• Three-straight three-pointers by Haley Luckabaugh, Alana Bortner and Savannah Wilson extended the lead to 33-13 with 3:04 left in the first half. Day joined the three-point party as she knocked down a trey to extend the lead to 24 with just over two minutes to play in the first half.

• York ended the first half on a 15-6 run through the final six minutes of play to take a 39-17 lead into the locker room. The Spartans shot 50.0% from the floor and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Day led all players with 15 points and seven rebounds in the first half. 

• York received a scoring boost from the bench as Bailey Smith and Sammie Matteo recorded their first points of the game while six different Spartans recording a point in the third quarter. The Sea Gulls started attacking more and in turn drew more fouls as they went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the quarter, but York still maintained a 17-point advantage at the end of three quarters of play.

• With Day out of the game with an injury, Bortner, Ferris and Luckabaugh closed out the game as the trio combined for 16 fourth-quarter points and clinched York's fourth-straight CAC victory over the season.

Game Notes

After starting the season 1-3, York has won now won nine of its last 11 games, including four-straight in the CAC after opening conference play with a loss at Christopher Newport … York ranks second in the CAC standings after completing the first round of conference games with a 4-1 record … the Spartans have now shot 80.0% or better from the free throw line in each of their last three games after shooting 85.7% tonight … York improves to 24-34 all-time against Salisbury and tonight's win snaps a two-game losing skid at Maggs Center.
