How It Happened

• Neither team found a solid rhythm offensively in the first quarter as both sides shot under 30% from the field, including a combined 1-for-11 from three-point range. Mary Washington controlled the offensive lane with an 8-2 advantage in points in the paint and 6-0 lead in second-chance points. The Eagles managed to close the gap on the scoreboard and eventually take a slim, 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

• The tough shooting trend continued into the second quarter as both teams shot well under 30% from the field and combined for a 2-for-20 performance from three-point range in the first half. The defensive rebound numbers were just about even, but UMW held an 8-3 advantage in offensive boards, which translated into an 8-0 margin in second-chance points as the Eagles owned a 21-20 lead at halftime.

• A made layup by Bradi Zumbrum with 5:38 left in the third quarter capped a 9-7 scoring run to begin the quarter and put York ahead, 29-28, as the Spartans took their first lead since the first quarter. The two teams went blow for blow until a huge three-pointer by Alana Bortner on the final possession of the third quarter gave York the 40-35 advantage, the largest lead by either team to that point.

• Bortner remained hot from distance as she opened the fourth quarter with three-straight three-pointers to lead York on a 14-0 run by herself. Bortner's run proved to be the turning point as the Spartans never let the lead dip below seven after Bortner put them ahead by 14 with 8:01 left to play. Molly Day also came up big down the stretch as she contributed eight fourth-quarter points to go along with Bortner's 15.
