Lions Use Big Third Quarter to Down Spartans

HARRISBURG, PA – The Spartan women's basketball team dropped their third conference game after Penn State Harrisburg used a huge third quarter to put York away 70-60 on Wednesday night in Harrisburg.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• The Spartans struggled to score early as the Lions held them without a point until a Kayla Ferris layup almost three minutes into the contest. York clamped down on the defensive end also as they held PSU scoreless for almost four minutes during a low scoring first period that ended with a small 5-0 run to grab a 13-9 lead after the first quarter.

• The Spartans came out on fire on both ends as they opened the quarter on an 11-0 run and held the Lions scoreless for the first 5:14 of the period. The team traded blows and a Bailey Smith layup for the Green and White and a Kendis Butler three-pointer for PSU took the game tied up at the half at 24.

• The Lions took control in third quarter opening up on an 11-2 run to grab a 35-26 lead early in the third. Katie McGowan stopped the run for the Spartans as she scored seven straight points for York to cut the lead to four. PSU ultimately outscored the Spartans 26-14 in the period and took a 50-38 lead into the final ten minutes.

• The Lions kept their double-digit cushion for a majority of the fourth quarter and was only cut to as low as eight after a pair of layups from Debria Hendricks and McGowan. The Spartans could draw no closer and fell 70-60.

GAME NOTES

The Spartans are now 9-2 all time against the Lions … the loss snaps a seven-game win streak in the series over the Lions … this is the first 0-3 start in conference play for the Spartans since the 2014-15 season … Katie McGowan recorded a career-high 25 points as well as tying her career-high with 11 rebounds for the fifth time in her career … McGowan also recorded her third double-double this season … Kayla Ferris put up double-digit points for the tenth time this season in the loss … Logynn Fuller also tallied double-digits for the Spartans which was her eighth time reaching 10 or more points this year … York is now 3-4 on the road this season.

The Spartans return home as they host the Seahawks of St. Mary's College (Md.) in a CAC matchup on Saturday. Game time scheduled for 1:00 pm at Wolf Gym.
