York Offense Smothered in Conference Opening Loss

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Spartan women's basketball team opened up conference play with a 76-52 loss at the hands of the 12th ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• Both teams traded buckets for a majority of the first quarter with York taking the lead on two separate occasions on three-pointers by Alana Bortner and Victoria Varner giving them a 14-12 advantage. The Captains ended the period on a 10-0 run to take a 22-14 lead into the second quarter. 

• The Spartan offense went cold as the Captain defense clamped down and held York scoreless for the first 4:54 off the quarter before a Katie McGowan jumper broke the ice for the Spartans. CNU led by ten at the break by a score of 35-25.

• After another back and forth quarter for the first five minutes of the third quarter, the Captains began to flex their muscles on the offense end with a 13-0 run to push the lead out to 56-35. 

• The Captains kept the Spartans at bay and cruised to a 76-52 victory as their nation-leading field goal percentage defense held York to 29.5% shooting on the day.

GAME NOTES

The Spartans are now 6-10 all time against the Captains … this was the second loss in a row for York at the hands of CNU … the Captain defense held York to a season low 29.5% shooting, this was the first time the Spartans failed to convert on at least 30% of their shots … York also had a season high 28 turnovers in the loss … the Spartans grabbed 43 rebounds which was just the fifth time all season they had more than 40 … senior forward Katie McGowan tallied 18 points giving her double digits for the ninth time this season as she leads the way offensively for the Green and White with 14.4 points per game … McGowan also grabbed 11 boards giving her the second double-double for her season … Kayla Ferris set a new career high as she brought down 12 rebounds in the contest … Victoria Varner knocked down three deep balls en route to an 11 point outing which was her second double-figure scoring output of the season … York is now .500 at 3-3 on the road this season.
