Spartans Complete Comeback Over UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Spartan women's basketball team used a dominant second half to compete 18-point comeback win over Mary Washington 69-64 on Saturday afternoon.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• The first quarter was an offensive struggle for the Spartans offensively as Katie McGowan connected on three field goals which were the only three made baskets for the Spartan offense in the period. For the Eagles, Emily Thompson dropped seven of her game-high 24 points in the opening ten minutes to give UMW a 19-10 lead.

• The Eagles continued to dominate the first half as they opened up the second quarter on an 8-0 run to push their lead out to 27-10. Thompson added a trio of triples in the period and the Eagles opened up an 18-point lead early in the second period. York answered with an 8-0 run of their own that included a pair of threes from Logynn Fuller. A back-and-forth final couples minutes put the Spartans down a dozen headed into halftime.

• The third quarter is where the Green and White began to flex their muscles as they outscored the Eagles 18-4 in the period. The York defense held the Mary Washington offense at bay for 5:59 as they climbed back into the contest. The Spartans continued to dominate with a 10-0 run in the final 2:11 with all ten points coming from McGowan and Kayla Ferris to push the Spartans in front 46-44 and their first lead since 2-0 in the opening minute.

• The fourth quarter was more of the same from the Spartans as they had gained all the momentum. Ferris knocked down a pair of triples including another three-ball from Victoria Varner. York pushed the lead out to 60-50 with 4:37 to play. The Green and White finished off the Eagles going 7-for-8 from the charity stripe to complete the comeback win 69-64.

GAME NOTES

The Spartans are now 26-47 all time against the Eagles … the 18 point deficit was the largest the Spartans had comeback from to win this season … the four points allowed in the third period were the fewest the Spartan defense allowed in a quarter all season … York shot over 40% from the field for the second straight game … with the 10 steals, the York defense has totaled double-digit steals in five straight games … Katie McGowan now has four straight 20-point performances and has raised her average to 16.9 points per game, good for third in the CAC … she also tied a career-high with 6 steals for the third time in her career … Kayla Ferris went 2-for-3 from three in the win and is leading the conference shooting 47.1% from beyond-the-arc … the Spartans are now 4-5 on the road this season.

 

UP NEXT

The Spartans return home after two games on the road as the host the Frostburg State Bobcats on Wednesday to begin a three-game home-stand. Tip is scheduled for 6:00 pm in Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
