Spartan Offense Explodes, Overpowers Eagles 77-69

ST. DAVID'S, PA– The York College women's basketball team picked up a big non-conference road victory as four Spartans score in double figures to top the Eastern University Eagles 77-69 in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon in St. David's, PA.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• The Spartans jumped out of the gate hot scoring 9 points in the first 2:27 of the first period including back-to-back Molly Day layups off of Debria Hendricks assists building an early 9-4 lead. The Eagles answered with an 8-0 run to regain control and take a 17-12 lead late in the first quarter before York was able to battle back as Kayla Ferris hit a layup for two of her six first quarter points and York trailed 19-16 after one.

• The Green and White tied the game up quickly as Hendricks found Lindsay Brown who drilled a three-pointer in the first minute of the second quarter. The remainder of the period was played within five points as the teams traded blows and eventually went into the break tied 32-32.

• In the third quarter, Eastern's Regie Robinson hit a layup in the early seconds and then the Spartans broke out with an 8-0 run of their own with all eight points coming courtesy of Logynn Fuller to take a 40-34 lead. The Spartan defense clamped down holding Eastern scoreless for almost three straight minutes as they built their lead. Another York run, this time a 9-2 run, pushed the lead to 11 at 51-40, the first double digit lead in the game for either side after a Kayla Ferris free throw at the 2:44 mark. The Spartans controlled the remainder of the quarter and both teams hit three-pointers in the final nine seconds as York went into the fourth quarter up 10, 61-51.

• The Eagles knocked in back-to-back deep balls to cut the Spartan advantage to just two, 62-60, with 7:27 left in regulation and then the Spartans answered with another 9-2 run pushing the lead back up to nine and the Eagles never got the deficit below six points as York led the entirety of the final stanza to take the win 77-69.

GAME NOTES

The Spartans came alive scoring a season-high 77 points in the win … this was just the second time York has scored over 70 this year and are 2-0 in those games … York also shot a season best 48.1% from the field and made a season-high 19 free throws … the Green and White defense tied a season high with 13 steals on the game … eight of those steals coming via Kayla Ferris, a new career high … Ferris also set a new career high with 20 points in the win … Katie McGowan broke out of a brief scoring slump as she exploded with a season-high 21 points and tallied double-digits for the fifth time this season … York is now 2-1 away from York this season.

The Spartans will return home for another non-conference tilt as they host Juniata College on Wednesday, December 5. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
