How It Happened

• The opening quarter was back and forth early before the Blue Jays went on a 7-0 spurt to turn a 13-12 lead into a 20-12 advantage late in the stanza. The run was fueled by back-to-back three pointers from Maggie Wodicka and Lexie Scholtz.

• The Blue Jays built the lead to 13 on a Lillian Scott three pointer with 6:39 left in the half. The lead stayed in double figures until the Spartans went on an 11-0 spurt over the final 3:30 of the quarter as Hopkins held on for a 34-33 lead at the intermission.

• The Spartans captured the lead on back-to-back threes from Kayla Ferris and Logynn Fuller as York was in front 39-38 early in the third quarter. The stanza went back-and-forth over the final five minutes as neither team could grab the momentum. York pushed out to a four point lead on a Katie McGowan bucket with 26 seconds left in the half but Rory Cole answered with eight seconds left as the Blue Jays trailed 53-51 heading to the fourth quarter.

• Hopkins started off the fourth quarter with a flurry as Scott drilled a three pointer to give the Blue Jays a 54-53 lead. That triple kick started a 15-4 run that gave the guests a 66-57 lead. York battled back to cut the Blue Jay lead to four twice with the second time at 69-65 with 1:06 left. However, the Blue Jays held off the Spartans as they went 4-for-6 from the line over the final 45 seconds to salt away the win.

Game Notes:

The Blue Jays tied up the all-time series with the win on Saturday as both teams have three wins each … the schools have alternated wins in the six-game series … the last meeting in the series was a 55-44 Spartan win on November 16, 2011 in Baltimore … the Blue Jays dominated the Spartans on the glass, holding a plus ten rebounding margin … the Spartans actually had a 13-11 advantage in second chance points … York had an 18-13 advantage in points off turnovers  … both teams recorded 30 points in the paint … the game was the first contest of the year for Hopkins … the Blue Jays are picked to finish second in the Centennial Conference according to the Conference's pre-season poll … the Spartans did a much better job of taking care of the ball as they committed just 14 turnovers after 26 miscues in the season-opener at Messiah.
