Wagner Breaks Wins Record; Spartans Move Past St. Mary's in CAC Tournament Opener

YORK, PA – The York College women's tennis team posted a 6-3 win over St. Mary's in the opening round of the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference championship tournament on Saturday in York. The Spartans, the tournament's fourth seed, now advances to the CAC semifinals where they will travel to top seeded Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon.

York improves to 9-5 overall while St. Mary's sees their season come to an end at 7-9.

The story of the match was junior Katie Wagner earning a first singles win. The win enabled Wagner to become York's all-time leader in singles wins as she earned her 32nd career win on Saturday. Wagner passed Kaitlyn Acker with her 6-1, 6-4 first singles win over Melissa Barall. Wagner is now 32-8 in three years in the Spartan green and White.

St. Mary's jumped on top with a third doubles win as Claire Bodine and Savannah Bergen combined to earn an 8-6 win. Katie Wagner and Darian Naill evened the score at 1-1 with an 8-6 first doubles win. Rachel Wagner and Mckenzie Krout notched a 9-7 win in the second doubles match to give York a 2-1 lead heading to singles play.

Freshman Maisie Supp continued her banner rookie year with a 6-0, 6-0 fifth singles win for the fifth singles result. Supp is now 10-2 for her freshman year as she has been fantastic all season long. Rachel Wagner earned a 6-3, 6-4 second singles win over Marissa Romanek to push the Spartan lead to 4-1. Freshman Gina Liguori clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 sixth singles win over Savannah Bergen as York led 5-1. Katie Wagner followed with her historic win to push the lead to 6-1. The Seahawks got a pair of wins at third and fourth singles to close out the match.

The Spartans now head to top seeded Mary Washington to face the Eagles in the tournament semifinals on Wednesday. The match time will be determined on Monday.
