Spartan Women Open Campaign with 67-61 Win over McDaniel

YORK, PA – The York College women's basketball team opened their 2017-18 season with a 67-61 victory over McDaniel College on Wednesday night in York.

The Spartans got off to a fast first quarter start and never really looked back in opening their campaign with a victory.

How It Happened:

• The Spartans got off to a quick start as they began the game with an 10-2 spurt fueled by five layups including a pair by senior Katie Wagner. The Spartans grew the lead to 16-5 before the Green Terror hit three free throws to trim their deficit to 16-8. York pushed the lead to 13 on a Logynn Fuller triple with 1:21 left in the quarter. The Spartans would take a 23-11 lead after the first quarter of play. York shot 60% (9-for-15) from the floor in the first quarter but York committed nine turnovers in the opening 10 minutes of play.

• The Spartans opened the second quarter by scoring four of the first five points of the period, increasing their lead to 15 with 8:03 left in the half. The Green Terror started chipping away at the Spartan lead as they went on an 11-3 run, cutting the York lead to 31-23. Libby Bowles hit a three pointer to bring the Green Terror to within six. York answered with a Beth Wiseley three pointer but the Green Terror scored four of the final five points of the half to leave the Spartan lead at six heading to the break (36-30). McDaniel outscored York 19-13 in the quarter as the Green Terror attempted eight more shots in the period.

• The Spartans came roaring out of the break as it looked like they were primed to blow the game wide open. York started the half with an 11-0 run covering the opening 3:35 of the half. The Spartans cooled off as the Green Terror managed to cut the lead to 12 heading to the fourth quarter. York held the Green Terror to just 2-of-17 shooting in the quarter but McDaniel did go 6-for-8 from the free throw line to stay in the game.

• The Spartans maintained their lead in double figures until Renie Tsomos canned a three pointer with 4:53 left, cutting York's lead to 63-54. The Green Terror continued to hang around as York could not put McDaniel away. The Spartans pushed the lead back to eight on a Katie McGowan lay up with 58 seconds left. Jasmine Smith split a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left and then got a three pointer from Caroline Ward with seven seconds left, cutting the Spartan lead to four. Senior Sam Mocniak hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left to seal the victory.

Game Notes:

The Spartans have won three straight in the series but McDaniel still holds a 20-12 all-time advantage in the series … York has won six of their last seven against the Green Terror … The Spartans are now 16-5 in season openers under head coach Betsy Witman as she starts her 21st year at the helm of the York program … junior Katie McGowan established a new career-high with seven assists while she was one rebound short of tying her career-high of eight … York committed 23 turnovers in the game including nine in the opening quarter … York outscored McDaniel 36-16 in the paint while McDaniel held a 20-13 advantage in points off turnovers … the McDaniel bench outscored York 29-15 … York shot 54.5% in the first half and held McDaniel to 36.7% shooting but only led by six because of their 14 first half turnovers.

 

Up Next:

The Spartans will host the 11th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. In the opening round of the classic format, the Spartans will host College of New Jersey in the 6:00 pm followed by Rowan squaring off against Grove City at 8:00 pm.

On Saturday, Grove City will play TCNJ at 1:00 pm followed by York and Rowan matching up at 3:00 pm.
