How It Happened

• The Spartans opened up the action as Joel Teston (Manassas, Va./Forest Park) had fantastic chance just three minutes into the game. Teston collected a pass near the top of the box. Alvernia goalie Zach Rider came out to challenge Teston who struck a nearly perfect chip shot that bounced inside the six, caromed off the cross bar and bounded back into play. It was a nearly perfect shot that had many of the Spartans on the field thinking it was already 1-0.

• The Green and White did make it 1-0 just over four minutes later as freshman Keith Witherell (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) took a pass from fellow freshman Brook Addisu (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha) and beat Rider who was rushing out to challenge the shot as York captured the lead. The goal was Witherell's first of his collegiate goal.

• York added to the lead just over a minute and a half later as Rider took out Witherell on the right side of the box. Rider was carded and Ryan Ockford (Langhorne, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) got to take his second penalty kick of the year. Ockford buried the PK and the Spartans led 2-0, 9:05 into the game.

• The Spartans pushed the lead to 3-0 when freshman Barak Amige (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) notched his first career collegiate goal 17:37 into the game. Amige's goal was assisted by senior Matt Freibaum (New Market, Md./Linganore). Freibaum played a long header back to the middle of the box off a Spartan corner kick. Amige collected the pass at the top of the box and banged home the one-time shot for his first collegiate goal.

• York outshot the Crusaders 5-1 in the opening half while each team had one corner kick.

• The Green and White wasted little time opening the second half with a goal as Freibaum took a back heel pass from Teston and finished the chance into the back of the net. The goal came just 1:07 into the second stanza.

• The Crusaders got on the board courtesy of a Spartan turnover. The Crusaders lost possession deep in the York defensive third. The Green and White gave the ball right back with Spartan netminder Charlie Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) out of position allowing Alec Denlinger to easily finish the chance, spoiling the shutout. It would be Alvernia's lone shot on goal in the game.

Match Notes:

The Spartans improve to 4-0-2 all-time in six meetings with the Crusaders … the Spartans are now 2-0 for the 12th time in school history … the record for the most wins to start the season was set by the 2008 squad as they started 18-0 before suffering their first loss of the season … Ryan Ockford has matched his career high for goals in a season in just two games as he had three goals during his freshman year (2014) … Two of Ockford's three goals have come via the penalty kick … the Spartan offense has gotten off to a good start with seven goals in two games but that's not close to the school record as the 1996 team tallied 14 goals in their first two games … the 2007 (12 goals), 1989 (11 goals), and 2004 (11 goals) are three other teams that have reached double figures in goals in the first three games … after having their first two games at home, the Spartans head out on the road for a three-game road trip as they travel to Franklin & Marshall, Stevenson and Gettysburg … those three road games will be played in the next six days including Stevenson and Gettysburg being back-to-back next Friday and Saturday … York is 3-4 all-time against F&M with the Diplomats winning the last contest on August 30, 2014.

Up Next:

The Spartans head out on the road for the first time on Tuesday evening when they head to Franklin & Marshall to face the Diplomats in a key non-conference clash. Opening kick off from Lancaster is set for 7:00 pm.
