Box Score YORK, PA – The sixth ranked Christopher Newport Captains remained unbeaten in the Capital Athletic Conference as they downed the York College Spartans 80-60 on Saturday in York.
The Captains improve to 16-0 in the league as they are 22-1 overall. The Spartans fall to 9-14 overall and 5-11 in the league.
The Captains jumped out to an early lead as they hit York with an 8-0 spurt to start the game. The Spartans scored 12 of the next 18 points of the game to draw to within two at 14-12 with 10:43 left in the opening half. Junior Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) scored eight of the 12 points on the run as the Spartans were hanging with the talented Captains.
The Captains answered York's spurt with a 21-2 run, a burst that pushed the CNU lead to 35-14 with 4:07 left in the opening half. The Captains would push the lead to 23 on an Aaron McFarland three with 2:43 left in the stanza. The Spartans scored the final three points of the half as the Captains took a 40-20 lead to the break.
The second half saw the Captains maintain their lead in opening minutes until the Spartans went on a 9-1 spurt, cutting the CNU lead to 53-38 with 12:55 left in regulation. York eventually cut the deficit to 12 (65-53) on a Jason Bady (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Henderson) lay up with 4:17 left. The Captains outscored the Spartans 15-7 the rest of the way for the 20-point margin of victory.
Marcus Carter powered the Captains as he notched his fourth double-double of the year with 27 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Carter was 11-for-16 from the floor including 2-of-3 from three and 3-for-5 from the line. He also had three blocked shots, two steals and two assists in his 32 minutes of work. McFarland came off the bench to tally 11 points and three assists for the Captains. Tim Daly and Hunter Wetherell each added eight points while Daly also pulled in nine rebounds in the win.
Myers paced the Spartans as he recorded a season-high 27 points in his 39 minutes of action. Myers was 11-for-16 from the floor, 1-for-2 from three and 4-for-6 from the stripe. He added six rebounds and three blocked shots for York. Senior Chris Conway (Luthersville, Md./Dulaney) added 15 second half points as he was 5-for-8 from the floor, 2-for-4 from three and 3-for-3 from the line. Matt Scamuffo (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) contributed eight second half points, snapping his streak of three 20 point games in a row.
The Captains dominated York on the glass as the held a 41-28 margin in rebounding including 16-3 in offensive rebounds. CNU held an 11-2 advantage in second chance points for the game. The rebounding edge, teamed with York's 17 turnovers, allowed the Captains to hoist up 17 more shots than the Spartans.
The Captains shot 42.9% from the floor including 40% (8-for-20) from three. CNU was 18-for-25 (72%) from the free throw line in the game.
York shot 52.2% from the field but just 18.8% (3-for-16) from three. York also uncharacteristically struggled from the stripe as they were just 9-for-15 (60%) from the line.
The Spartans will head out on the road for their final road trip of the year on Wednesday night when they head to Frostburg to match up against the Bobcats. Tip time at the Bobcat Sports Arena is set for 8:00 pm.
