Spartan Men Snap Two Game Skid with 77-72 win over Stevenson

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 77-72 win over Stevenson University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday evening in York.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• The Spartans got off to a quick start as they led the Mustangs 13-5 just over eight minutes into the game. The Spartans pushed the lead to 16-8 on a Brad Wesner three pointer with 11:15 left in the opening half. The Mustangs hit the Spartans with a 12-2 run to take a 20-18 lead with 5:33 left in the stanza. Stevenson pushed the lead to a game-high six on a Cameron Hayes lay up, making the score 28-22 with 2:53 left in the first.

• The Mustangs would settle for a 34-31 lead at the break after York scored nine of the final 15 points of the half. The Mustangs had a huge advantage in points off turnovers in the first half as they scored 12 points off seven York miscues while the Spartans managed just one point on the nine Stevenson mistakes.

• Stevenson scored the first bucket of the second half but York responded with an 11-0 run capped by a Matt Scamuffo three as the Green and White pushed out to a 42-36 lead. The Mustangs got a Tim McNeal jumper to temporarily stem the tide but York ripped off nine straight points, pushing York to a 51-38 lead just under six minutes into the second half. The overall run to start the second half was 20-4.

• York eventually increased the lead to a game-high 15 points at 63-48 with 9:19 left in the game. The Mustangs, who were on the brink of getting blown out, used the next five minutes to get themselves right back into the game. Stevenson embarked on a 13-4 run, cutting York's lead to 67-61 with a mere 4:04 left in the game. York built the lead back to eight on a Mike Frauenheim three pointer with 3:15 left in the game. The Mustangs were undeterred as they cut their deficit to four on a pair of Tim McNeal free throws with 1:38 left. Frauenheim pushed the lead back to six on a free throw with 41 seconds left but Cameron Hayes hit a pair of freebies ten seconds later followed by a steal and a basket by Walt English cut York's lead to just two with 24 seconds left in the game.

• The Mustangs were forced to foul and senior Brad Wesner was clutch as he drilled two free throws with 20.4 seconds left, pushing York's lead back to four. The Mustangs' Tim McNeal missed a contested three-pointer with six seconds left and York got the rebound to gain possession. Jared Wagner was fouled with less than a second left and he split the pair of free throws to provide for the final five-point margin of Spartan victory.

The Spartans have now won two straight against the Mustangs as they are 15-5 in the all-time series … York has won seven of the last eight in the series … York won just their second game when trailing at the half as they are now 2-3 while they are 4-0 when taking at lead to the locker room … York converted a season-high 10 three-point field goals … there was a combined 52 fouls with three players fouling out in the game … the teams combined for a season-high 61 free throws as York was 21-for-29 while Stevenson was 23-for-32 … York's 29 attempts were their third highest total of the season after the 39 against St. Vincent and the 34 against PSU Harrisburg …York's 11 offensive rebounds ties their second highest total of the season … York had 16 assists and 14 turnovers for their third plus ratio of the year and their first in their last seven games … York had a season-low one blocked shot against the tall Mustangs squad … sophomore Mike Frauenheim set a new career-high with 11 points while his two three-pointers tied a career-high … sophomore Jason Bady had his second straight double digit effort as he is now averaging 8.4 points per game … Bady also pulled in five rebounds as he now has five games with five or more rebounds this year … freshman Jared Wagner tied his career-high with four assists, a mark he has reached three times in nine games this year … freshman Joey Polczynski had a career night on the glass with six rebounds while he tied his career-high with four points … junior Zack Galic grabbed a team-high seven rebounds as he now has four games with six or more rebounds this year … junior Blayde Reich reached double figures for the fifth time this year … senior Brad Wesner nailed all four of his free throw attempts in the win … as he is now 8-for-10 from the line of the year … York is now 3-1 at home … the Spartans won their first game of the year when being outrebounded ... York placed four player in double figures which is the first time they have done that in 2016-17 … the Spartans went with their fourth different line up of the year.

The Spartans are now off until Thursday, December 29 when they face Johns Hopkins University in the opening round of the RMC Coaches Classic hosted by Randolph Macon University. The Spartans and Blue Jays square off at 5:00 pm followed by Randolph Macon and FDU-Florham at 7:00 pm. The championship round will be held Friday, December 30 with the consolation game at 5:00 pm followed by the championship game at 7:00 pm.
