NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College men's basketball team had their three-game win streak snapped as the #6 Christopher Newport Captains downed the Spartans 85-59 in Capital Athletic Conference action on Sunday afternoon in Newport News, VA.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• The sixth ranked Christopher Newport Captains got off to a fast start in the game as they blew out to a 12-2 lead just 3:05 into the game. Rayshard Brown scored eight of the 12 points on the game-opening run.

•Junior Zack Galic drilled a three, cutting the York deficit to five at 13-8. The Captains pushed the lead back to 12 at 24-12 but the Spartans battled back again, trimming the CNU lead to six at 28-22 with 5:39 left in the half.

• The Captains again surged ahead, this time building the lead to 15 on a Tyler Femi three with 2:46 left in the half. The Spartans ripped off an 11-0 run, cutting their deficit to just four at 39-35 with 27 seconds left in the half. York got back-to-back threes from Brad Wesner and Mike Frauenheim on the run. The Captains got a pair of free throws with three seconds left to extend their lead to six at 41-35 at the break.

• Much like the first half, the Captains got off to a fast start to open the second half. CNU scored the first 12 points of the half to push out to a 53-35 lead just under six minutes into the half. York battled to cut the lead to 12 on a Zach Novick three but the Captains responded with a 10-0 run to push their lead to 22 with 7:24 left in the game.

• The Captains would slowly increase their lead as they maintained a lead in the 20's the rest of the way.

The Spartans fall to 1-8 all-time against the Captains as CNU has won eight straight in the series … the loss snaps a three-game win streak for the Spartans … Christopher Newport improves to 32-3 at the Freeman Center since the start of the 2014-15 season … The Captains shot 50% from the floor as they are just the second opponent to shoot 50% or better in a game against the Green and White (Franklin & Marshall) … York was outrebounded for just the second time this year … The Captains outscored the Spartans 40-22 in the paint … York shot a season-low 35.2% from the field … the Spartans are now 1-2 when trailing at the half … CNU shot 31% from three and it's the first time the Spartans have lost when holding an opponent below 35% from distance … senior Dalton Myers enters Wednesday's game three points short of 1,000 career points … CNU's Tim Daly reached 1,000 career points in the win for the Captains as he now has 1,001 points with his second half free throws … Zack Galic made his first two collegiate three pointers in the game … sophomore Mike Fraunheim made his season debut after missing the first six games of the year for the Green and White … the Spartans went with a new starting lineup in the game as Dalton Myers and Jared Wagner made their first starts of the year in the game … Zach Novick had a productive game off the bench as he tallied seven points and five rebounds in 13 minutes of action for York.

The Spartans return to Wolf Gymnasium on Wednesday evening to face the Wesley Wolverines in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Tip time at Wolf Gymnasium is set for 8:00 pm as the second game of a Spartan doubleheader.
