Spartan Women Open CAC Play with 60-39 Win

MIDDLETOWN, PA – The York College women's basketball team opened Capital Athletic Conference play with a 60-39 road win at Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday night at the Capital Building on the campus of Penn State Harrisburg.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

• The Spartans got off to a fast start as the Spartans led 14-1 5:25 into the game. The Spartans then went scoreless over the final 4:30 of the first quarter as the Lions scored the final six points of the quarter as the Green and White led 14-7 after 10 minutes of play.

• The Green and White locked down the Lions defensively in the second quarter. The Spartans opened the quarter with a Morgan Golec three-point play, pushing their lead to 10 at 17-7. The Lions got a free throw from Raven Ransom but the Spartans scored the next eight points of the game as York led 25-8. Kaitlyn Carmo hit a three pointer with 1:56 left but Katie Wagner hit a lay up to give York a 27-11 lead heading to the break. The Spartans limited the Lions to just four points in the second quarter.

• The Lions cut the Spartan lead to 13 at 29-16 but the Spartans answered with a 13-3 run to take a 44-22 lead late in the quarter. The run was highlighted by a pair of three pointers from point guard Brianna Bisci. The Spartans would take a 44-24 lead to the fourth quarter.

• Harrisburg the Spartan lead to 14 thanks to a 7-2 spurt to start the fourth. York responded with a 13-3 run to put the game on ice before the Spartans settled for the 21 point CAC win.

The Spartans are 6-1 against PSU Harrisburg as York has won four straight in the series … senior Sam Hruz is now just four blocked shots short of 200 for her career …. Junior guard Katie Wagner finished one point short of her career high as she poured in a season-high 19 points … Wagner has reached double figures in four of her six games this year as she leads York in scoring at 13.3 points per game … Hruz pulled in 13 rebounds for the fourth time this year … Hruz has collected double figures in rebounds in five games this year as she leads York, and the CAC, in rebounding at 11.5 rebounds per game … senior guard Brianna Bisci had a season-high eight points including a pair of three-pointers … the Spartans continued their struggles from the free throw line as they went 13-for-21 (61.9%) … York has been under 70% from the free throw line in all but one game this year … York shot under 40% from the field in their third game for the year while they were under 30% from three for the second time this year … the Spartans' three three-pointers were a season low while their 16.7% from downtown was also a season-low … York was outrebounded for just the third time this year as the Lions had a 48-41 margin on the glass … the Spartans limited the Lions to just 24.6% shooting from the floor, their third opponent that they have held under 30% … York forced 27 Harrisburg turnovers, the second time this year that the Spartans have forced 25 turnovers or more … York scored 21 points off the 27 Lion turnovers … York held a 32-14 edge in points in the paint.

The Spartans return to Charles Wolf Gymnasium to host the University of Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference contest on Saturday, December 3. The Eagles enter the game ranked 17th in the nation according to D3hoops.com. Tip time on Saturday is set for 1:00 pm in York.
